Summary

This position will maintain the City of Charlotte’s traffic signal management system including embedded loop detection, wireless sensors, video detection cameras, fiber optic cabling and troubleshoot electrical and electronic problems for the Engineering & Operations Spratt St. work group.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot signalized intersections for problems and perform repairs in the field as needed 
  • Locate, identify and mark CDOT copper or fiber optic cable • Ensure compliance with NC (811) One-call Center 
  • Work extended hours during special projects, emergency situations, inclement weather, or as required.
  • Participate in on-call rotation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of electronic and electrical work as related to the repair of traffic signal equipment 
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in electronics and electrical repair work 
  •  Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in electrical work 
  •  Ability to diagnose and repair malfunctions in traffic signal equipment 
  •  Ability to read and interpret typical wiring diagrams for traffic signal equipment 
  •  Skill in the care and use of tools, equipment, and materials related to work 
  • Strong computer skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office programs, knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment 
  •  Ability to read and interpret signal plans provided by traffic engineers. 
  • Knowledge of the MUTCD and Nationals Electrical Manufacturer’s Association and National Electric Code standards for signal equipment • Ability to maintain records of materials, supplies, time, and work performed

Preferred Qualification

  • Strong background of methods, materials, tools and standard practices for the installation, operation and maintenance of traffic signal equipment, fiber and copper communications and the locating of underground cables 
  •  Work experience in electronics 
  • Experience working with live 120-240 volt electrical circuits and electrical wiring

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduate or Equivalent and one (1) year related work experience

Associate's Degree

  • $45,374.00 - $56,717.00 / Year; Commensurate with experience

Conditions of Employment
