Overview

The City Manager’s Office is a collaborative, dedicated team who work across the city to carry out City Council priorities. This position will be a one-year position, and individuals may return to original their department at the conclusion of the year. 

Summary

The City Manager’s Office is launching a new effort to train the next generation of leaders and provide development opportunities to individuals within the City of Charlotte who would like to gain city management experience. This position will work with senior leaders and executives on short- and long-term projects in a variety of capacities including research, report writing, policy development, and other administrative support in a results-focused environment. 

The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is adaptable, a self-starter, uses tact and discretion, and is able to manage concurrent projects with a variety of deadlines. 


Major Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in the development of short- and long-term plans across a variety of disciplines such as community safety, economic development, and affordable housing
Research, interpret, and synthesize reports and data to provide recommendations
Prepare written reports, presentations, and other documents for internal and external use
Provide clear and concise technical and administrative reports
Navigate complex situations with tact, confidentiality, and independent judgement
Coordinate projects involving a multitude of stakeholders, both internal and external to the city

Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least six years of service with the city, or an Associate’s Degree and at least four years or a Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years with the City of Charlotte. Requires excellent oral and written communication, ability to work in a team in a dynamic environment. The preferred candidate will have an interest in pursuing a career in city leadership or management. The ideal candidate will demonstrate creativity, curiosity, and a “how might we” approach to challenges. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate the ability to handle multiple tasks, align strategies and concepts, and work independently to move forward initiatives, projects, and tasks.

Salary

Commensurate with experience.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
