Summary

The Aviation Fleet Maintenance Apprentice shall be trained at various levels of Heavy Equipment Service to perform semi-skilled to skilled tasks in mechanical maintenance and repair of heavy and light vehicles operated by Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  This position will perform work under the guidance and general direction of the apprenticeship mentor and supervisor.  

Also, the Aviation Fleet Maintenance Apprentice will be required to attend CPCC (Central Piedmont Community College) and earn an Associate of Applied Science in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology. This is in addition to performing semi-skilled tasks in mechanical maintenance.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Mechanical maintenance & repair of heavy / light vehicles such as: 
o Automobiles
o Trucks
o Graders
o Mowers
o Tractors
o Buses
o Fire trucks
o Small motorized equipment 
o Other standard & special automotive equipment

Shift may vary depending on academic schedule 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of methods / tools / materials used in maintaining & repairing automotive / related equipment
Knowledge of operating principles of internal combustion engines & mechanical components of automotive equipment
Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment 
Perform complex mechanical repairs independently
Ability to prepare / maintain work records & routine reports
Ability to follow oral & written instructions
Ability to interpret & work from specifications
Skills in use & care of tools / equipment / materials used in all types of automotive repair work
Work in conjunction with daily work load & academic schedule to maintain forty hours per week

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduate/GED required.

Candidate must maintain successful enrollment per educational requirements at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC).  

Skills assessment required prior to start.

Conditions of Employment
