Summary

The Crime Scene Search Investigative Tech position is responsible for answering crime scene division telephone inquiries, gathering information from victims and witnesses, completing appropriate reports and supplements regarding preliminary investigations, and entering reports into CMPD systems.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor all unit supplies.
  • Purchase all supplies for Crime Scene processing while maintaining awareness to budgetary restraints and limitations.
  • Be the gatekeeper for Digital Evidence Management System (DEMS) for digital evidence submitted by CMPD officers and Crime Scene Search Investigators.
  • Delineate issues or concerns related to DEMS with CTS Operations Support.
  • Maintain permissions for special groups in DEMS such as permissions to view Officer Involved Shootings and Homicides.
  • Correspond with NC District Attorney’s office and the US Attorney’s office regarding upcoming cases and photographs needed for evidence.
  • Design and ensure completion of large-scale photographs needed for Court proceedings and Internal Affairs.
  • Receive and fill photographic requests associated with criminal cases from the DA’s office and detectives as well as outside agencies.
  • Complete special assignments as directed by the unit supervisor or chain of command.
  • Assist citizens by addressing concerns and questions utilizing advanced knowledge of assigned departmental operations, as well as citywide issues and functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures, systems such as word processing, call reporting, using multiple computer systems, and other office procedures and terminology.
  • Ability to implement problem-solving techniques. 
  • Research, compile, and prepare reports, manuals, correspondence, or other information required by management or governmental agencies.
  • Deliver clear and concise written and/or verbal communications.
  • Manage multiple tasks and prioritize as needed.
  • Be cross-trained in order to perform in a variety of assignments including testifying in court.
  • Be resourceful, innovative and motivated while maintaining professionalism with both internal and external customers.
  • Able to work flexible hours, which may include different shifts and rotating days off
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays 

ADA and Other Requirements 

Positions in this class typically require: fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Physical Requirements:
  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking extended periods of time 
  •  Light to moderate lifting and carrying; some crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required

 Sensory Requirements:

  • Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proof reading, data entry, tabulating data
  • Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain
  • Comprehensive of written information in work related documents
  • Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions; moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as officers, community members, victims, etc.); and frequent exposure to computer screens, files and phone. 

Other Requirements

Successfully complete and pass a pre-employment hearing, vision, and respirator clearance evaluation. Failure to successfully pass all segments of the pre-employment evaluation process will result in disqualification from further consideration under this vacancy announcement.

 

 

 

Preferred Qualification

  • One year relevant work experience
  • Type 35+ wpm
  • Two plus years experience as a computer end-user
  • Skilled in specialized computer systems, i.e. databases, reporting
  • Two plus years experience of customer service delivery
  • Bi-lingual is a plus (not required)

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduate or Equivalent

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
