Summary

Work involves monitoring secured gates, the terminal, loading dock and controlling vehicular and pedestrian access at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  Provide direction and information to the public in a tactful and courteous manner aligned with the airport’s Customer Service Philosophy.  Act without direct supervision using independent judgment and discretion in accordance with departmental, local, state and federal rules, regulations, laws, ordinances and standard operating procedures.  This is an unarmed uniformed position.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

1. Monitor checkpoints and secured gates and the terminal loading dock.  Inspect vehicles ensuring that the entry of vehicles, drivers and passengers meet airport security clearance requirements.
2. Direct pedestrian, vehicular and construction-related traffic as necessary to prevent congestion.
3. Issue citations in accordance with departmental, local, state and federal rules, regulations, laws and security directives.
4. Document security incidents, citations and related situations in writing and verbally.
5. Maintain situational awareness and notify applicable resources to potential hazards.
6. Conduct security related inspections of airport property and take appropriate corrective action in accordance with the Airport Security Plan.
7. Provide information to the public and employees.  Respond to and assist with emergency and urgent situations.

General Information:
Works assigned shift in a 24/7/365 essential security environment.  Hours vary and will require weekend and/or evening work.  Schedule subject to change, will require overtime and call back as necessary to fulfill airport security requirements.
Subject to recall for severe weather, urgent and/or unforeseen situations.
Must provide and maintain up-to-date contact information.
Valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain and maintain a city driving permit required.
Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude them from employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of applicable rules, laws, ordinances and security directives, or ability to obtain such knowledge within 30 days of hire.
Skills to direct traffic, complete reports and citations clearly and accurately.
Ability to pass required employment training and related testing
Ability to recognize potential threats, and respond quickly and calmly to emergency situations.
Ability to be clearly understood over radio communications.
Ability to verbally communicate clearly and effectively with diverse populations.
Ability to deal courteously and firmly with the traveling public, persons operating vehicles on airport roadways and those seeking access to secured areas.
Ability to represent the airport and the City of Charlotte in a professional, positive manner and provide exceptional customer service to the traveling public, tenants, co-workers and others.

Preferred Qualification

Customer service experience preferably providing front-line service. Experience with physical security and access control functions a plus.

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
