Function

The City of Charlotte, Charlotte Water Department is currently accepting applications for Laboratory Analyst I Co-op position for the Pipeline Academy Co-op Program. 

Summary

The individual will work under the supervision of the Charlotte Water Lab Services Division. To be compliant with the lab certification requirements,  the candidate must be a recent graduate from a recognized curriculum at an institution of post-secondary education majoring in Math, Science, or biology.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Applicants for this position learn the following tasks as it pertains to the daily work:
Receive, check, and log samples into the laboratory information management system.
Maintain legal Chain of Custody
Perform sample preparation and analysis according to approved methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs and QA procedures.
Record, observe and calculate lab results accurately. 
Specific software and hardware utilized in the lab
Scientific math to include serial dilutions, unit conversions, etc.
Ability to work independently and accomplish assigned tasks with minimal supervision
Record deviation from established protocols; maintain sample/Chain of Custody        documentation; follow a checklist
Recognize and adhere to policies of the laboratory regarding hold times and   turnaround times
Identify and notify superiors of atypical or rush analyses
Identify and inform project management of receiving or sample anomalies
Develop cost-consciousness; comply with centralized ordering; conduct inventory 
Clean and organize area

Physical Requirements:
Standing, walking, bending, and light lifting

Minimum Qualifications

Recent graduate in an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree with major course work in a related field of study specific to the departmental or work assignment.
Proficient with Microsoft Office
Valid North Carolina Driver's License

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
