Function

This position organizes and coordinates the work of a survey party to perform water and sewer route surveys, construction surveys, boundary surveys, and control surveys. 

Summary

Work involves establishing preliminary location information; performing as-built surveys; collecting GIS data, using survey equipment; determining sewer and water routes; researching deeds, right of ways and easements; generating field topography; locating utilities; and using AutoCAD to show data gathered in the field for engineers to design new sewer and water lines.  This position serves as a vital member of the Survey Section and work closely with other Divisions of the Charlotte Water Engineering Division.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Organizes and coordinates the work of a survey party to perform water and sewer route surveys, construction surveys, boundary surveys, and control surveys.
Plans survey.
Establishes preliminary alignments, locations, and elevations for the design of water and sewer facilities.
Performs as-built and GIS data collection utilizing survey grade GPS.
Conducts utility or route surveys using electronic total stations, electronic data collectors, and GPS systems. 
Ensures that field survey data is collected according to the standards set by North Carolina Board Rules
Collects data; downloads data; checks data for anything out of place; and corrects inaccuracies.
Ensures safety during field work surveys.
Coordinates field surveys for civil engineers and project managers.
Assists survey consultants with daily field activities.
Serves as a vital member of the section and works closely with other divisions of the CLT Water Engineering Division.
Depending on assigned area, supervises and coordinates work activities of assigned staff; assigns work, monitors status of work, and inspects completed work; participates and provides input in staffing decisions relative to hiring, firing, discipline, and promotional opportunities; evaluates performance; mentors staff; and aids with career development.
Operates survey equipment.
Researches deeds; identifies right of ways and easements. 
Determines the best possible route, 
Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of Trimble software and systems.
Knowledge of geometry and trigonometry.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of land surveying and mathematics as applied to surveying 
Skill in applying AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge. 
Ability to operate survey equipment,
Ability to create, collect, and edit GIS data.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is medium work and requires applying 30 pounds of force frequently and exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

Preferred Qualification

Desires Certified Survey Technician credentials. Professional Land Surveyor (PLS), or Surveyor Intern Certification preferred

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in surveying technology, geography, engineering, or a related field from an accredited school.

Five (5) years of related work organizing and coordinating the work of a survey party to perform water and sewer route surveys, construction surveys, boundary surveys, and control surveys along with experience in utility or route surveying using electronic total stations, electronic data collectors, and GPS systems 

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations: 

Desires Certified Survey Technician credentials. Professional Land Surveyor (PLS), or Surveyor Intern Certification preferred

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
