Overview

Charlotte Communications and Marketing develops innovative and strategic communication and marketing solutions to advance the city’s overall vision and tell the stories that shape Charlotte. The Charlotte Communications and Marketing team members are subject matter experts in the areas of internal communications, media relations, video and web services, program management, community engagement and graphic design.


Summary

The department is seeking a hard-working, creative thinker to serve as its next Multimedia Journalist. This role will play an integral part in telling some of the city’s most important and compelling stories. This position is a member of the Digital Content Team and reports to the Digital Media Manager. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

· Create original news reporting and feature-length videos; conduct on-screen interviews. 
· Source ideas and develop scripts and compelling storytelling angles; shoot and edit videos for multiple platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, broadcast, etc.).
· Coordinate video shoots for assigned projects including directing, setup and camera operation.
· Produce both short- and long-form video packages, including on-camera interviews, narrated explainer videos, news packages and public service announcements.
· Collaborate with internal content creators to develop compelling packages about the City of Charlotte’s priorities, services, people, and culture.
· Conduct research and maintain a strong attention to detail while information gathering; ensure content is factual, verified, and relevant.
· Build relationships with internal subject matter experts and external stakeholders for interview opportunities.
· Follow local and national trends to identify storytelling opportunities. 
· Produce and edit video and graphics using Adobe Creative Suite products, or mobile applications when necessary.
· Stay up to date on modern digital trends and video distribution strategies.
· Monitor industry trends and make recommendations for the city’s content strategy as appropriate.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

· Strong on-camera presence required; experience with and without scripts.
· Experience with video/audio studio, DSLR and mobile phone.
· Experience producing, shooting, editing, and disseminating video content. 
· Excellent interview, communication, and research skills. 
· Experience in writing in Associated Press style, and ability to adapt tone/writing style to subject and platform.
· Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom, etc.).
· Experience with nonlinear equipment.
· Ability to manage projects with long lead times and deliver under tight deadlines. 
· Ability to work independently or in group settings to produce high-quality videos. 
· Knowledge of best practices for various platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
· Basic search engine optimization knowledge preferred.
· Ability to exercise ethical judgment when gathering information and reporting information to all audiences.


Preferred Qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism or a related field of study
  • One or more years of relevant work experience
  • On-camera experience highly preferred

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED 
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license 

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able stand for long periods of time  
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 – 50 lbs. of equipment for short distances. 
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to walk, stand, use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk and hear. 
  • Regularly required to sit or stand, reach, bend and move about the facility.
  • Exposure to atmospheric conditions will be encountered. 
  • Significant work in all weather conditions is to be expected  
  • Schedule changes should be expected

Salary

$62,000 - $66,000; Commensurate with Experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
