Summary

The Engineering Coordinator in Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) will be a key member of the LYNX Silver Line Project team with essential tasks and activities such as  project coordination, engineering milestone reviews, communicating with the public and property owners, utility coordination, directing consultant teams and other activities as directed.  Work performed may be technical and detailed, requiring application of professional engineering principles and quantitative analysis. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in project resolution of design elements in coordination with project stakeholders
  • Coordinate project related tasks and activities such as communicating with the public.
  • Assist with other project documentation and tracking activities.
  • Coordinate and assist with engineering milestone reviews.
  • Coordinate and evaluate sustainability activities for transit and transit related projects.
  • Perform project management duties and other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

· Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, and scheduling software programs,excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills: ability to work on various projects simultaneously under strict timelines, ability to work in a team environment.

  • Previous engineering or construction management experience demonstrating progressive responsibility in civil engineering, municipal improvement projects or other engineering disciplines. 
  • Previous design or technical planning experience with transit projects is desirable.
  • Certification as an Engineering Intern or Professional Engineering license is desirable.
  • Ability to successfully apply engineering design principles for the development of construction plans, specifications and estimates for municipal transit and transit related projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with NCDOT and other Federal, State and local entities as required.
  • Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use conflict resolution techniques.  
  • Valid driver’s license, good driving record and ability to receive and maintain a City Driving Permit.

Preferred Qualification

2 to 3 years of project management and construction oversight related experience; prefer transit/transportation planning and facilities related experience; experience managing complex third-party contracts, preferably transit-related; valid driver’s license required.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements include graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors Degree in Engineering or a related field. The position also requires excellent communication, organization of heavy and complex workloads, customer service skills, and accomplishing objectives within established scopes, budgets and schedules. Experience with transportation planning, facility design, and construction is preferred.

Conditions of Employment

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
