Summary

The Labor Crew Chief II serves in an operational team lead capacity under the guidance of the Field Operations Supervisors. Assists in the supervision of crews. Exercises independent judgment and makes sound operational decisions to ensure established performance standards and safety practices are met.

 Hours: 3rd Shift: 10:00pm to 6:30am; Sunday through Thursday

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Distribute & monitor equipment / supplies issued to employees
  • Ensures employees / work practices follow all Solid Waste & City policies OSHA regulations / other safety practices
  • Prepares / maintains operational & administrative reports
  • Monitor & review routes / tonnages / daily service issues
  • Respond to all safety related accidents & incidences
  • Resolve all collection issues reported by crew members

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to follow specific instructions / recognize & apply safe work practices
  • Ability to walk long distances
  • Lift & carry 100lbs.
  • Work outdoors exposed to all weather conditions
  • Ability to work holidays / nights / weekends other unusual hours as needed in support of special events or emergency response
  • Excellent interpersonal / written & verbal communication / customer service skills
  • Knowledge of traffic laws
  • Basic knowledge of Windows applications / Emerald / Kronos
  • Valid Class A or B CDL
  • Ability to obtain & maintain City driving permit

Preferred Qualification

  • Previous manual labor experience
  • Previous supervisory experience

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduate or Equivalent and five years relevant work experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
