Summary
The Crime Scene Technician position requires the individual to process crime scenes to include the search and recovery of latent finger and palm prints, trace, DNA and other physical evidence. This position also takes photographs, prepares sketches and documents the search and collection for physical evidence.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Responds to area hospitals and the Medical Examiner’s Office to document and collect evidence in criminal investigations
- Prepares crime scene reports for presentation in court and gives court room testimony
- Maintains issued equipment and follows safety protocols at crime scenes
- Prepares evidence for submission to the CMPD Lab for examination and assists Police Officers with criminal investigations
- Conducts training of new employees and other police department employees as needed. Provides demonstrations to outside entities as requested
- Regularly conducts forensic examinations of digital evidence in a laboratory environment.
- Documents the examinations results and transmits those results to the submitting authority
- Provides court testimony regarding the results of the analysis and prepares courtroom presentations.
- Maintain laboratory equipment in a manner that keeps the equipment in operational readiness for a variety of forensic tasks
- Responsible for the proper documentation, routing and dissemination of all messages and information as received
- May instruct law enforcement officers in the proper identification, collection, and submission of criminal evidence as it relates to digital forensics
- Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to develop thorough knowledge of evidence chain of custody procedures and requirements
- Knowledge of principles, methods, equipment, and current techniques used in forensic evidence testing
- Knowledge of investigative and laboratory techniques
- Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, and agency practices and procedures
- Knowledge of methods used in collecting and preserving digital/physical evidence, maintaining legal chain of custody
- Skill in problem-solving techniques
- Ability to follow oral and written procedures and policies
- Ability to read and comprehend authoritative directives, laws, and ordinances
- Ability to perform a high volume of standard digital forensic examinations and/or other related tasks

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions; moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as officers, community members, victims, etc.); and frequent exposure to computer screens, files and phone. Diligent use of PPEs Personal Protective Equipment) to limit exposure to bloodborne pathogens is required
Preferred Qualification
- Associate’s Degree in Forensic Science, Criminalistics, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field
- One year of experience in crime scene investigations or forensics
- Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
Minimum Qualifications
High School Graduate or Equivalent and three years related work experience
OR
Associate's Degree and one year of related work experience
Conditions of Employment
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
