Internship

Summary

The City of Charlotte is offering a transportation planning internship in the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT). The intern will work with CDOT’s Planning and Design Division, assisting with the various plans, programs, projects, and studies required to meet these objectives.

The day-to-day work and philosophy of the division is reflected in the City’s Transportation Action Plan, Urban Street Design Guidelines, Charlotte BIKES and Charlotte WALKS plans, available for review on the City’s website.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

•Assists with various CDOT initiatives such as planning / designing for complete streets & integrating land use / transportation decision making
•Collects & analyzes data including socio-economic / demographic data / geographic information / traffic counts / surveys / field inventories
•Creates & edits geospatial data
•Contribute text / tables / graphics to various technical reports & presentations
•Provides summary research for transportation issues as needed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

•Strong computer skills in areas such as internet research / report compilation / data analysis
•Knowledge of Microsoft Office & ArcGIS
•Ability to express ideas clearly / concisely orally & in writing
•Ability to work independently and in a team environment

Preferred Qualification

•Familiarity with Adobe InDesign & Illustrator
•Substantial interest in transportation planning & engineering

Minimum Qualifications

•Current enrollment in an accredited college or university leading towards a Bachelor's degree with major course work in urban planning / civil engineering or related field

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
