Summary

Charlotte Area Transit System provides bus, rail, paratransit and vanpool services for the Charlotte region.  The system is also expanding under the guidance of the 2030 Transit Corridor System Plan, a bold long-range plan that consists of multiple rapid transit improvements in five corridors, a series of Center City improvements, and bus service and facility improvements throughout the region.

CATS is seeking a knowledgeable and enthusiastic public and community relations manager in its Marketing and Communications Division. The successful candidate will be passionate about storytelling, developing strong communications strategies, and building relationships that strengthen CATS’ reputation and image.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

1.      Demonstrated leader

2.      Excellent consulting, writing, presentation and communication skills

3.      Ability to learn, understand and present complex issues as they relate to CATS’ stakeholders, government agencies and the general public

4.      Experience with proactive media outreach & thought-leadership strategies

5.      Knowledge of public relations best practices

6.      Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, media and general public

7.      High proficiency level of computer skills using Microsoft Word, Outlook, Power Point, and Excel.

8.      Must be able to work outside of traditional 8a-5p hours

Preferred Qualification

  At least five years of experience with in-house or communications agency

  Experience managing people and teams

 Track record of developing and executing communications strategies

 Experience working with journalists and responding to media requests

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates for this position are required to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college

 or

University with major coursework in public relations, communications or related field. 

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
