Summary

The Community Affairs Team’s work aligns with Charlotte Douglas International Airport's (CLT’s) strategic priority of Strong Partnerships in the fulfillment of the vision to serve as an economic engine of the Carolinas, facilitating the movement of people and goods, creating jobs and enterprise, and sustaining a higher quality of life.

The Community Affairs Coordinator is responsible for the execution and implementation of strategies designed to represent the Aviation Department favorably and make positive contributions to the community. This position will focus on the Community Affairs programs that engage and support the community and employees. This position is responsible for the execution and implementation of events that connect the Airport to the larger community. The ideal candidate is someone who has a demonstrated history of event planning; a skill for building strong relationships across private, public, and social sectors; and a strong sense of community. Tasks require a strong attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines. Role requires evening and weekend work. Reports to the Community Affairs Manager. Standard office hours apply, however, after hours meetings, urgent or special situations will require attendance at unusual times. Accessibility by phone during off duty hours to assist in the response to urgent or special events is required.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Implement Community Affairs programs for community engagement in the areas of education, economic mobility, and youth and families. Program management includes project execution, framework creation, and development of policies and procedures.

• Manage programs to raise awareness and educate the community about Charlotte Douglas International Airport and its economic impact on the region, including the management of CLT’s Aviation Academy.

• Develop strong relationships that can be leveraged to enhance the overall community engagement program. Identify and manage integrated partnership opportunities to increase positive social impact in the local community and deepen social collaborations between Aviation, its business partners, and community groups.

• Enhance engagement and collaboration with Airport Neighborhood Committee.

• Support the annual CLT Charity Golf Tournament, including execution of the event, sponsorship engagement, and working with tournament manager in executing event.

• Implement employee volunteer initiatives through CLT Soars program. Manage volunteer events and engagement opportunities for Aviation Department staff in the surrounding communities. Establish and report to senior management on benchmarks related to employee volunteer efforts.  Promote volunteer effort outcomes through multiple platforms.

• Support, manage and promote CLT Aviation Department current and future community events. Assist in the organization of larger events as needed, including Runway 5K, Wings for Autism, United Way and Arts & Science Council campaigns, and other activities.

• Leverage various community networks to promote Airport engagement efforts.  (i.e. Business Diversity Programs communicating about Job Fair and Airport Community Partnerships).

• Lead Airport tours for community, corporate, and non-profit groups.

• Strategize with Communications, Marketing, and Executives to ensure CLT is well-positioned in the community with proper messaging. Has a thorough understanding of the workings of the Airport and the Aviation Department.

• Represent the organization at events and participates in civic organizations.

• Document, refine and implement policies and procedures for department to standardize practices as necessary.

• Work with internal Marketing and Communications teams to create and activate messaging and creative materials.  Work closely to launch new initiatives with appropriate internal and external stakeholders.

• Conduct appropriate research and make recommendations regarding appropriate external partnerships.

• Experience developing and managing community programs, including event management experience.

• Detail-oriented with ability to delegate to staff, volunteers, and vendors.

• Ability to build an integrated network of partnerships and collaborations with public, private, and community organizations.

• Advanced interpersonal skills.

• Strong written and verbal communications skills across organizational levels and with varied stakeholders.

• Ability to lead Airport tours to community, corporate, and non-profit groups.

• Excellent public speaking, written, and presentation skills.

• Ability to understand goals and motivations of multiple stakeholders.

• Advanced skills in Microsoft Office and virtual meeting platforms.

• Ability to demonstrate initiative and self-motivation.

Preferred Qualification

Preferred degree in community relations/affairs, marketing, public relations/affairs, communications, business, government and constituent relations or related field. 

Preferred work experience in public relations, corporate management, non-profit management, event management, community relations or related fields.  Airport or aviation experience a plus.

 

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent and seven years relevant experience.

Or

Associate's Degree and five years relevant experience.

Additionally:

Valid driver’s license with ability to qualify for and maintain City driving permit.

Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude from employment.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
