Summary

Responsible for project management and engineering activities related to the LYNX Silver Line light rail project.

The Senior Engineer plans, organizes, reviews, and directs engineering work performed by consultants and departmental staff, and provides technical assistance in the development and design of rail and rail facilities in coordination with other internal divisions, City Departments, local jurisdictions, State and Federal Government Agencies (i.e. FTA, NCDOT, etc.), and other external stakeholders.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance and manage/coordinate technical aspects of the development and design of transit corridor capital projects, particularly rail infrastructure and facilities.
  •  Direct/oversee consultant in the preparation of technical documents
  • Perform interim and final reviews of plans, cost estimates, specifications, reports and other relevant project documents/deliverables prepared by subordinates and consultants
  • Perform reviews of engineering plans from private developers as necessary
  • Prepare a variety of reports, technical, papers, correspondence, other documents and materials required for assigned projects
  • Prepare requests for proposals and review responses, as needed
  • Review bids for contract awards Work with multiple municipal, agency, and community stakeholders
  • Represent the project team at technical/project coordination meetings
  • Represent the project team and present project information/updates in public meetings and hearings
  • Supervise and assist in preparation of materials for presentations to citizen/community groups, technical groups, and others as required
  • Participate in meetings with citizens, businesses, and property owners affected by the proposed project
  • Contribute to project discussions/decisions regarding technical approach, cost, and project milestone schedules

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to manage, prioritize, and coordinate multiple assignments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Demonstrated ability to listen and work effectively as a team member
  • Ability to work tactfully and successfully with municipal staff, consultants, contractors, and representatives of other agencies
  • Ability to apply knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering to specific assignments
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and virtual meeting platforms
  • Proficiency in eBuilder, Bluebeam, GIS and Auto CAD is desirable 
  • Construction/field experience is preferred
  • Familiarity with any of the following is desirable: light rail transit projects; utilities; stormwater management; roadway design/construction practices; ADA compliance; etc.

Preferred Qualification

Experience managing LRT or other transit related projects is preferred 

Minimum Qualifications

Requires BS in Civil Engineering (or related field) from an accredited college or university (Master's Degree preferred)

Registration as a professional engineer is preferred

Minimum five (5) years progressively responsible experience managing engineering and construction projects and contracts
