Summary

We are currently seeking a Diesel Technician – Senior to join our award-winning Fleet Management Division.  The Diesel Technician will be a key member of a dedicated team of ASE Medium and Heavy certified technicians, supporting the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. 

Our garages offer modern column lifts and state of the art factory diagnostic software and tooling.  The City of Charlotte has a diverse and modern fleet of over 7,000 assets.  This is a second shift position at the Sweden Road Garage. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Daily evaluation / inspection / diagnosis / repair of Fire Department apparatus, heavy fleet, fire equipment and/or trucks & construction equipment 
  • Daily evaluation, inspection, diagnosis and repair of fire apparatus heavy fleet and equipment
  • Diagnose & repair of complex electronically controlled diesel engines / modern electrical systems / mobile electronic systems / air & braking systems / complex hydraulic systems on fleet assets
  • Inspect vehicle systems / perform preventative maintenance / diagnosis & repair of failed components on vehicle's body / chassis / auxiliary systems
  • Assess & recommend actions for replacement and/or life cycle use of equipment
  • Utilize fleet maintenance software to accurately document work performed
  • Communicate with all levels of fleet operations & customers ensuring repairs are completed 
  • Interpret manuals / electrical diagrams / diagnostic software
  • Understand & follow safety procedures
  • Support an on-call schedule 24 hours a day, including holidays and weekends, for 7 consecutive days. 
  • On-call schedule will require the technician to be on-call in a 4-week rotation

  • Analyze / evaluate / effectively write diagnosis & recommendation of work being performed to complete work orders
  • Follow oral & written instructions
  • Ability to troubleshoot mobile communications equipment malfunctions
  • Ability to operate technical & computer test equipment
  • Ability to lift up 75 lbs. of equipment and/or tools
  • Must have or obtain the following licensures within ninety (90) days of hire:
  • NC Inspection License
  • AC Recover & Recycling License
  • Must have within one year of hire:
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Good driving record
  • Ability to obtain & maintain City driving permit 
  • Ability to provide basic tool box & tool box set

Preferred Qualification

  • Considerable experience in performing journeyman level diesel service technician work on all types of heavy equipment 
  • Experience with diagnosing & repairing medium to heavy fleet & equipment including fire apparatus
  • Degree or certification from an accredited technical school, college or university or and manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE
  • ASE certification(s) applicable to position

Minimum Qualifications

No High School diploma/GED with five (5) years of relevant work experience; or a High School diploma/GED with three (3) years of relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
