Function

Seeking a Plumber in the Building Services Division of the General Services Department. This position will be responsible for performing demands related to plumbing services, preventative maintenance, and repairs to plumbing systems in approximately 180 City facilities. This position will also be responsible for annual inspections of back-flow preventers. Serves as a subject matter expert in the plumbing trade and as a liaison to the project manager for new facilities being built. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of commercial plumbing systems including but not limited to: 
  • Multi-story plumbing systems
  • Lift station maintenance
  • Back flow devices 
  • Gas lines
  • Water lines
  • Pipe hangers and supports
  • Foundation cuts
  • Pipe threading
  • Water closets
  • Water lines 
  • Commercial washing machines 
  • Water fountains
  • Bottle fillers
  • Water heaters
  • Rebuild of water fixtures including:
  • Flushing systems
  • Valves
  • Shower valves
  • Faucets
  • Knowledge and repair of drainage systems:
  • Sanitary waste lines
  • Storm drains
  • Oil Water separators
  • Septic systems
  • Ability to work with Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), copper and cast iron
  • Caulking of joints and test finished equipment
  • Understand and follow safety procedures
  • Preventative maintenance for plumbing systems

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to read blue prints and diagrams
  • Must be able to work overtime, including weekend/holiday on-call and emergency call backs
  • Must have a good driving record, valid Driver’s License and ability to maintain a city driving permit
  • Works well as part of a team
  • Must be able to lift to 75lbs. of equipment and/or tools
  • Ability to load and unload extension ladders from top of utility van and place upright against buildings
  • Ability to climb ladders, crawl and work in small spaces
  • Works in an organized, clean and safe manner
  • Ability to work in a Microsoft Suite and a computer-based work order management system
  • Must be able to work within close proximity of animals  

Preferred Qualification

  • Considerable knowledge of principals and a mastery of skills of plumbing and plumbing systems

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma with five (5) years of relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties 
  • Requires current Unlimited NC Plumbers License
