The Kennel Attendant will:
· feed
· water
· groom
· bathe
· exercise
· care for pets & other nonfarm animals such as:
o dogs
o cats
o ornamental fish or birds
o zoo animals
o mice
· work in settings such as:
o kennels
o animal shelters
o zoos
o circuses
o aquariums
· May keep records of feedings / treatments / animals received or discharged
· Feed & water animals according to schedules / feeding instructions
· Mix food / liquid formulas / medications / food supplements according to instructions / prescriptions / knowledge of animal species
· Examine & observe animals to detect signs of illness / disease / injury
· Contact veterinarians to secure treatment to sick or injured animals
· Do facility laundry
· Clean / organize / maintain / disinfect animal quarters such as:
o pens & stables
o equipment
o saddles & bridles
· Perform animal grooming duties such as:
o washing
o brushing
o clipping
o trimming coats
o cutting nails
o cleaning ears
· Respond to questions from patrons
· Provide information about animals such as:
o behavior
o habitat
o breeding habits
o facility activities
· Order / unload / store feed & supplies
· Hold or restrain animals during veterinary procedures
· Collect & record animal information such as:
o weight
o size
o physical condition
o treatments received
o medications given
o food intake
· Observe / caution children petting & feeding animals in designated areas to ensure safety of humans & animals
· Assist with anesthetize or perform inoculation of animals according to instructions
· Transfer animals from one location to another
· Exercise animals to maintain their physical & mental health
· Install / maintain / repair animal care facility equipment such as:
o infrared lights
o feeding devices
o cages
· Train animals to perform certain tasks
· Clean & unload equipment such as the incinerator
· Principles / processes for providing customer & personal services:
o customer needs assessment
o meeting quality standards for services
o evaluation of customer satisfaction
· Administrative & clerical procedures / systems such as:
o word processing
o managing files & records
o other office procedures & terminology
· Comfortably handle animals with behavioral issues which may include shyness & fearfulness
· Demonstrate approachability dealing with the public
· Develop positive relationships
· Sensitivity to the thoughts / feelings / perspectives of others
· Problem solve effectively & efficiently
· Communicate clearly & concisely, written / verbal communication
· Routinely lift 40 to 50 lbs.
· Perform strenuous manual labor
· Work independently & as member of team
· Work on weekends / holidays / varying shift times
· Work indoors & outdoors in all weather conditions
· Work with physically strong dogs
· Bend / stoop / hike / walk / kneel / lift
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.
Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
