Job Description

The Department of Planning and Zoning is seeking a dynamic and experienced executive-level professional to lead talented staff navigating development around multiple new regional metrorail stations, exceptional growth in residential and commercial sectors, agribusiness and agritourism, and historic preservation. Our mission is to provide a high level of staff support to the Board of Supervisors and other committees relative to land use, zoning ordinances, processes, and similar long and short range development matters. We also seek to provide a high level of service to the public, community stakeholder groups, and other County departments. This position will report to the Director of Planning and Zoning and provide oversight of the Community Planning, Land Use, Zoning, and Customer Service Center sections within the department, and may provide project management support for major projects and interdepartmental initiatives. The Deputy Director will assist the Director with department operations, including but not limited to budget development and personnel issues.

Job Requirements

Master's degree in planning or related field and 10 years of progressively responsible experience in planning and zoning, including five years at a supervisory level. Experience as department director or assistant director and AICP is preferred. This position requires knowledge of the objectives, principles, practices, and techniques of comprehensive planning, urban planning, land use, and zoning; organizational structures and functions of local Government; principles and practices of effective management and supervision; and the literature and trends in planning and zoning. Ability to develop short and long-range programs; plan, assign, coordinate, and evaluate the work of employees engaged in planning, land use, and zoning; develop, interpret, and apply policies, laws, and codes; produce concise, clear written reports of both a technical and non-technical nature; prepare and deliver effective presentations to elected and appointed officials, community groups, and internal and external interests; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, public and private officials, developers, representatives of the County and other governmental agencies, community groups and the general public.

Special Requirements

Attendance at night meetings is expected.
