Summary Statement

An incumbent in this class provides oral health education and clinical preventative services in non-traditional community setting, dental clinic attached to a skilled nursing facility.

Nature and Scope

An incumbent reports to a technical supervisor. Work includes assisting in patient oral health management by providing oral hygiene and appropriate preventative services to dental patients in non-traditional community settings and/or clinics. The Registered Dental Hygienist provides comprehensive therapeutic oral care and preventative oral health education to patients with diverse backgrounds.

Essential Functions

  • Provides clinical oral hygiene services including but not limited to dental prophylaxis, scaling, sealant application, fluoride application, x-rays, and dental impressions.

  • Conducts initial mouth screening, checks oral health history and conducts oral cancer screenings.

  • Maintains patient documentation, paper charts and electronic dental records. Records patient-hygienist transactions so that the dental record accurately reflects the nature of the contact and the care or treatment provided.

  • Provides preventative oral health education to patients either in person or virtually.

  • Assists the Dentist with appropriate treatments and performs independent procedures as delegated and directed by a dentist in accordance with state regulations and law.

  • Sterilizes dental equipment in accordance with established guidelines and procedures.
     
  • Maintains the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) Log.

  • Knowledge of use and care of hand instruments, dental equipment and the appropriate use of dental materials.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of current developments in the field of dental hygiene.
  • Skill in providing excellent customer service and support to patients.
  • Skill in organizing and prioritizing workload.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with managers, co-workers, patients, and professional groups.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • Ability to maintain accurate patient records.
  • Ability to educate individuals regarding preventative oral health care.
  • Ability to comply with Federal and State regulations regarding skilled nursing facilities.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Dental Hygienist
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Delaware Dental Hygienist License or eligibility for a Delaware license. 
  2. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
