Summary Statement

A class incumbent supervises staff implementation of treatment plans developed by professional staff.  Work typically includes individual/group treatment for clients/patients/residents suffering acute or chronic disabilities including one or multiple physical, mental, developmental disorders.

  • Supervises non-professional nursing and therapeutic positions.

Nature and Scope

An incumbent in this class reports to a technical superior and is responsible for overseeing and participating in the day-to-day implementation of active treatment programs. Work includes scheduling staff, assigning work, observing client/staff interaction, and review of therapy session documentation. An incumbent participates on interdisciplinary teams to provide input on the effectiveness of training plans and to recommend revisions/modifications.

Essential Functions

  • Plans, assigns, reviews and evaluates staff  work, schedules shift assignments to ensure sufficient coverage and efficient operations. Assists with staff training and administers discipline/recommendations for corrective action.
     
  • Monitors/participates in the implementation of all designated individual program plans. Reviews daily documentation/monthly reports. Discusses needed change with technical superior. Plans and participates in client activities, trips, and reinforcement sessions. Prepares and maintains unit/client activity reports/records.
     
  • Oversees the physical operations by requisitioning supplies and inspecting facilities regarding health, safety and appearance. Completes and follows up on maintenance orders to ensure that repairs are completed in a timely manner. Ensures clients/patients/residents have adequate and appropriate clothing and personal articles.
     
  • Intervenes in crisis situations, using appropriate therapeutic techniques. Investigates/documents unusual incidents/reports findings.
     
  • May work with public/private sector to define/establish employment opportunities for client/patient/resident. Guides/teaches client/patient/resident regarding employment behavior.
     
  • Participates in inter-disciplinary team meetings to provide input on client needs, strengths, and weakness and discuss client/patient/resident progress to assist the team's development of client's individual program plan.
     
  • May drive/ride van to transport/accompany client/patient/resident to and from the facility or around grounds.
     
  • Assists with non-certified nursing procedures.

  • Knowledge of the principals and practices of supervision.
  • Knowledge of the applicable Federal and State laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines
  • Knowledge of facility safety/security policies/practices/procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper equipment use.
  • Knowledge of applicable department, division, and facility policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of community resources including educational, recreational, employment, and housing.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of record keeping/report preparation.
  • Skill in implementing treatment plans.
  • Ability to assess effectiveness of individual treatment programs/plans and  recommend modifications.
  • Ability to assess/report health/safety/operational issues.
  • Ability to document activities/maintain records.
  • Ability to design/assess the effectiveness of simple data collection to gauge program  efficiency/progress.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Active Treatment Supervisor
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: 

  1. Six months experience in instructing and assisting clients in developing functional, social, recreational and vocational skills.
  2. Six months experience in working with persons with disabilities.
  3. Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  4. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  5. Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.
