Summary Statement

This class is responsible for barbering work at the helper level shaving patients at a State institution for the mentally and physically ill or developmentally disabled.

Nature and Scope

This class reports to an administrative superior and is responsible for shaving patients, cleaning and sterilizing barbering instruments, and recording daily activities in a log.

Essential Functions

  • Shaves patients at a State institution.
     
  • Sharpens, adjusts, cleans and sterilizes razors, clippers, scissors and other barbering equipment.
     
  • Maintains work area in clean and orderly condition.
     
  • Records data pertaining to daily activities and prepares reports of same.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of giving shaves.
  • Ability to sharpen, adjust, clean, sterilize, oil and grease razors, clippers, scissors and other barbering equipment.
  • Ability to put patients at ease and exercise patience and understanding when working with the physically and mentally ill and developmentally disabled.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment when confronted with aberrant behavior.
  • Ability to learn to keep records and prepare routine reports.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Barber Assistant
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Delaware Barbers Assistant license or eligibility for a Delaware license.
