Notice to all applicants: to be considered for Summer 2019 vacancies, you must take and pass a Physical Assessment Test (outlined below) on one of the following dates: March 8, 9, 15, 16, or 21. Applicants do not have to possess the required certifications to attend the Physical Assessment Test. If invited to attend the Lifeguard Recruitment Training Program, the City of Ventura will provide the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification at no course fee to the applicant. If hired, there is mandatory pre-service training on June 7, 8, and 9.

Those applying for Lifeguard II-Swim Instructor positions are required to obtain their Water Safety Instructor Certification prior to June 1, 2019 independently.

THE POSITION

We are currently recruiting to fill upcoming temporary Lifeguard I, Lifeguard II-Swim Instructor and Office Aide vacancies. These are temporary support staff classifications, paid on an hourly basis. Lifeguard I ($12.00 to $13.00 per hour)

Under direct supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, plans, organizes and conducts swim lessons and performs lifeguard duties specific to program area. Requirements: Candidates must be at least 16 years of age at time of appointment, successfully complete the physical assessment test and interview process, attend the Lifeguard Recruitment Training Program and possess all of the following certifications by appointment:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training

Lifeguard II-Swimming Instructor ($13.00 to $14.00 per hour)

Under direct supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, plans, organizes and conducts swim lessons and performs lifeguard duties specific to program area. Requirements: Candidates must be at least 16 years of age at time of appointment, successfully complete the physical assessment test and interview process, attend the Lifeguard Recruitment Training Program and possess all of the following certifications by appointment:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor

Office Aide ($12.00 to $13.00 per hour)

 Under supervision, assists higher-level clerical classifications by performing a variety of general clerical tasks.  Requirements:  Must be 16 years of age at time of appointment and possess a combination of education, training and experience equivalent to some general volunteer experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Employment Information:  Right to Work:  Before employment, candidates must submit documentation verifying their legal right to work in the United States.  Background Check:  A pre-employment verification of background may be conducted.  Probationary Period:  This is an ‘At-Will’ position, subject to termination at any time, without notice or right of appeal. 

Temporary Appointment Status:  Extra Help:  May work up to 999 hours per fiscal year.  Limited Term:  May work over 999 hours per fiscal year up to 18 months.  Extended Term:  May work over 999 hours per fiscal year 18 months – 3 year maximum.

Direct Deposit:  Paychecks are automatically deposited into employee bank accounts.

Wellness Program:  A comprehensive program is available, including on-site gym, classes, downtown/beach walking routes, weight loss, and tips on nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

Retirement:  In lieu of Social Security, Temporary, Extra-help employees, not currently CalPERS members, are enrolled in the City’s Part-time, Temporary, and Seasonal Employee 457 Deferred Compensation retirement plan.  If you are a CalPERS member, please notify Human Resources at the time you are hired and your retirement contributions will be handled in accordance with the City’s CalPERS contract.  If you are a CalPERS retiree, please contact CalPERS to discuss the impact that your employment in this position would have on your pension benefit.  Receiving a CalPERS benefit may affect your Social Security upon retirement.  For further information, contact a Social Security office or go to www.socialsecurity.gov/form1945.

Limited Term or Extended Term employees are covered by the CalPERS retirement system.  

Other Benefits:  The City will comply with the requirements of the Paid Sick Leave Law in accordance with California Labor Code Sections 245 through 249, enacting the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 and will offer group health coverage to those who qualify under the Affordable Care Act.  Temporary employees are not eligible for vacation, holidays, or any other benefits provided to regular employees.

Lifeguard I / Lifeguard II-Swim Instructor applicants: Bring a copy of the completed application/supplemental to the Physical Assessment Test. Complete the Physical Assessment Testing and subsequent selection steps outlined below. The preferred method of application is on-line, and you are highly encouraged to apply at www.cityofventura.ca.gov/jobs. Applicants must take the Physical Assessment Test on ONE of the dates outlined below.

PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT TESTING

The Physical Assessment Test consists of a 400- yard swim in under 7 ½ minutes and a 10-lb. brick tread for 1 minute. All skills are pass/fail. Applicants are only required to attend one date. Physical Assessment Testing will be held at the Ventura Aquatic Center located at 901 S. Kimball Road, Ventura, CA on the following dates and times.

 

 

Fridays, March 8 & 15, 2019: 6:00pm - 7:00pm

Saturdays, March 9 & 16, 2019: 2:30pm - 3:30pm

 Thursday, March 21, 2019: 5:30pm - 6:30pm

 

 

 

On the date of your Physical Assessment Test you MUST bring the following:

  • A photo ID verifying date of birth
  • Copy of your online application and supplemental questionnaire

 

Completion of additional forms related to employment, education, and reference information may be required on the date of your Physical Assessment Test.

 

INTERVIEWS

After your Physical Assessment Test, selected applicants will be scheduled for an interview date/time. Interviews will be held in March and will determine candidates selected to attend the Lifeguard Recruitment Training Program.

 

LIFEGUARD RECRUITMENT TRAINING

Applicants selected from the interviews will be invited to attend the Lifeguard Recruitment Training (LRT) program scheduled for April 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, and 14Attendance on all dates is required in order to successfully complete the course. Training will consist of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer First Aid, and Emergency Medical Response courses, as well as City of Ventura Aquatics Section policies and physical conditioning sessions. Current possession of these certificates does not replace the requirement of attending Lifeguard Recruitment Training. Those successfully completing LRT will be placed on a hiring list. All hiring of new staff will be done from this list. For those hired, there is a MANDATORY pre-service training scheduled on June 7, 8, and 9 (times vary).

 

 

ATTENDANCE AT ALL SESSIONS DURING LIFEGUARD RECRUITMENT TRAINING IS HIGHLY ADVISED. FAILURE TO ATTEND MAY RESULT IN THE DISQUALIFICATION OF THE APPLICANT.
