The City of Ventura is seeking creative, energetic individuals interested in temporary or seasonal part-time employment supporting recreation, youth after-school programs, nature and history outdoor education, sports, cultural or senior programs offered through the Parks, Recreation and Community Partnerships Department.

Depending on your level of experience and the operational needs of each program, openings may be filled at any of the following levels:
Recreation Leader I/II: Provides task-oriented supports to programs providing on-site oversight of participants, activities and classes. Schedules program facility and equipment, receives and accounts for cash management, maintains attendance and activity records, assesses and maintains security of facility and seeks assistance as needed.
Recreation Specialist: Plans, organizes and coordinates a community program in a specialized area requiring advanced knowledge, skills or ability related to that area; trains support staff and may work on projects within a given field. May provide transportation for participants, driving a city vehicle.

SPORTS LEAGUE PROGRAMS / YOUTH & ADULT (year round)
($10.50 - $15.00 per hour)
Depending on assignment, may provide site supervision or act as an attendant monitoring and overseeing a variety of youth and adult sporting events, including basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer and flag football. Duties may include scorekeeping, scheduling, communicating with staff and participants, cash management (making deposits) and completing related reports. Must have some experience in team sports or outdoor recreation.
SAILING CENTER PROGRAMS (year round)
($10.50 - $12.25 per hour)
May provide on-site supervision and/or instruction for programs and special events, and support for a variety of programs and activities in the areas of sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding. May assist with maintenance and upkeep of necessary equipment. Must possess CPR and First Aid certifications.
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS (school year) &
SCHOOL BREAK CAMP PROGRAMS (summer & school breaks)
($10.50 -$15.00 per hour)
Depending on assignment, plans and develops programs or provides staff support to the following youth programs:
PEAK After School Program (weekday afternoons): Coordinates after-school enrichment activities at school sites providing homework assistance and organizing day-to-day activities including sports, games and special programs. May develop curriculum and provide instruction related to sports, enrichment, music or dance.
Westpark Community Center: Coordinates after school enrichment activities at Westpark Community Center. Activities include homework assistance, computers, art, music, gym activities and special programs. Westpark also provides youth sports leagues for soccer, basketball, and flag football.
School Break Camp Program: Coordinates and organizes school break activities at camp program sites and outdoor facilities throughout the city, and leads planned activities, sports, games and special programs. May develop curriculum and instruct programs related to sports, enrichment, music or dance or nature studies.
NATURE & HISTORY OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAMS
($10.50-$15.00 per hour)
Depending on assignment conducts programs in the following areas:
Nature & History Outdoor Education Programs: school group field trips and in-school workshops (weekday mornings during the school year): Conducts "hands-on" education programs for elementary school-age children (preschool through 6th grade), working as an outdoor educator (Interpretive Specialist) with the city's Interpretive Outreach Program focusing on California history or nature studies in an outdoor setting at local park and historic sites. Nature & History Outdoor Education Programs: for residents & visitors (year-round occasional weekday afternoons or weekends): Conducts outdoor nature or history activities or walks geared for families, adults, seniors and/or children of all ages. May occasionally assist with program development.
CULTURAL ART & SPECIAL EVENT PROGRAMS (year round)
($10.50 - $15.00 per hour)
Depending on area of assignment, provides general office program support including computer/data entry and customer assistance at City Hall or Barranca Vista Center, or supports the following programs:
City Hall Public Art: Acts as Docent scheduling, coordinating and conducting tours of City Hall Public Art and trains volunteer tour guides.
Special Events: Provides assistance including location set-up and breakdown of city-sponsored events including Music Under the Stars (at Olivas Adobe), 4th of July Street Fair and other weekend events as required. Requires availability on weekends.
Cultural Arts Classes: instructors for creative and performing arts for all ages.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS (year round)
($10.50-$20.00 per hour)
Community Garden Assistant: Provides care and maintenance of common areas, pathways, vacant plots and garden supplies. Provides tours and orientations to prospective gardeners and hosts once a month volunteer workday on a Saturday.
Volunteer Program Assistant: Support the Volunteer Ventura! program by hosting onsite volunteer projects, including set up and take down of event, update volunteer database and assist with volunteer outreach and social media. Requires weekend availability.
Customer Service Representative: Assist phone and walk-in clients with Parks & Recreation class registration; provide information and referrals on citywide programs; responsible for data entry, cash handling, filing, and clerical duties in support of the division supervisor and PRCP department staff.
Senior Nutrition: Under the supervision of the Senior Nutrition Specialist, assist in the preparation and serving of meals to senior patrons at congregate meal site(s); oversee senior nutrition volunteers; cash handling and administrative duties in support of nutrition program.
ADULT RECREATION PROGRAMS (year round)
($10.50 - $15.00 per hour)
Travel Program: Assists in tour planning, coordination, billing, reporting, marketing and computer record maintenance, coordinating tour escorts, vendors and bus charters.
Tour Bus Driver: Provides tour transportation, assists travelers and completes travel documentation. Requires valid California DMV Class B Driver's license with passenger endorsement, current medical certificate and complete DOT training. General knowledge of wheelchairs and mechanical lifts is desirable.
This is a temporary, extra-help position, working up to 20 hours per week and paid on an hourly basis. Assignments may include working at night, weekends, holidays, and include travel to game or tour locations.
Sports Officials and Instructors:
Umpires, referees and instructs a variety of games, events, matches and sports in a fair and impartial manner including softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, dodge ball, tennis, sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding. Sports officials and instructors will be trained and proficient in specific sports and will conduct games and instruction as designed.
Swimming Exercise Instructors:
Sets up and breaks down class equipment including but not limited to sign-in table, music and microphone, and exercise equipment. Instructors lead group exercise class providing proper form and technique for all classes.
Cultural Arts Instructors:
Instructs classes in theater, visual arts, dance, music and wellness for all ages at City sites and at community partner locations.
Assists tour participants with situations that may arise on tours and ensure their safety and well being.
Represents the City and oversees predetermined tour itinerary in a safe and secure manner making contact with the designated representative(s) at the tour destinations(s).
Plans, organizes, conducts and/or instructs a wide variety of recreation activities, programs and classes.
Promotes good sportsmanship, civil discourse, and civic engagement among participants and resolves conflicts, concerns, and participant issues.
Schedules activities and programs and arranges for facilities, supplies, materials, and equipment. Issues and accounts for equipment and maintains all supplies in good order. Recommends maintenance, repairs and/or replacement of equipment and facilities. Reports safety issues or equipment concerns to appropriate City staff members.
Maintains complete and accurate records of attendance, time reports, safety and incident/accident reports, program activities, progress reports, program evaluations, and meets deadlines.
Receives, deposits and accurately accounts for program monies.
Maintains security of recreation facilities.
Assesses and implements safety procedures. Provides first aid and seeks emergency assistance as needed.
May direct other staff conducting specific events or activities.
Attends and participates in required staff meetings.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Probationary Period: This is an ‘At-Will’ position, subject to termination at any time, without notice or right of appeal.
Temporary Appointment Status: Extra Help: May work up to 999 hours per fiscal year. Limited Term: May work over 999 hours per fiscal year up to 18 months. Extended Term: May work over 999 hours per fiscal year 18 months – 3 year maximum.
Direct Deposit: Paychecks are automatically deposited into employee bank accounts.

Retirement: In lieu of Social Security, Temporary, Extra-help employees, not currently CalPERS members, are enrolled in the City’s Part-time, Temporary, and Seasonal Employee 457 Deferred Compensation retirement plan. If you are a CalPERS member, please notify Human Resources at the time you are hired and your retirement contributions will be handled in accordance with the City’s CalPERS contract. If you are a CalPERS retiree, please contact CalPERS to discuss the impact that your employment in this position would have on your pension benefit. Limited Term or Extended Term employees are covered by the CalPERS retirement system.
Other Benefits: The City will comply with the requirements of the Paid Sick Leave Law in accordance with California Labor Code Sections 245 through 249, enacting the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 and will offer group health coverage to those who qualify under the Affordable Care Act. Temporary employees are not eligible for vacation, holidays, or any other benefits provided to regular employees.
