To perform basic manual work in the care, maintenance, and upkeep of public areas, such as parks, beaches, sidewalks, street medians, and other public and City-maintained areas. Duties are typically performed as a member of a roving crew.
Work hours vary depending upon the time of the year and may include weekends, afternoons, nights and/or holidays.
Incumbent may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Manager.
This classification performs unskilled and basic groundskeeping and maintenance duties as a member of the City’s Safe and Clean team. The Safe and Clean Groundskeepers typically travel throughout the City performing light maintenance, unskilled landscaping, and trash/debris pick-up in a variety of public areas and homeless encampments. This class differs from the Groundskeeper I/II class as the latter class performs skilled landscaping duties, such as mowing, irrigation, and field maintenance in addition to unskilled duties.
Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Performs a variety of unskilled and routine manual work in the care, maintenance, and upkeep of public areas, such as parks, beaches, sidewalks, street medians, and other City-maintained areas.
Performs daily Inspections of various locations throughout the City and reports homeless or other related activities to law enforcement; takes digital photos to document inspections and completes basic, fill-in activity reports.
Picks up litter, trash, and debris from various locations throughout the City and performs other housekeeping duties, including but not limited to emptying of trash cans.
Clean-up of homeless encampments.
Performs basic landscape maintenance functions such as watering, weeding, raking, and cultivating.
May be required to inspect, maintain, and clean restrooms and other areas/facilities utilized by the public.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of: basic landscape and grounds maintenance tools and techniques; safety rules, practices, and procedures related to groundskeeping and maintenance work.
Ability to: perform continuous, physical outdoor work; effectively and safely operate basic maintenance and housekeeping tools and equipment including shovels, rakes, brooms, and wheelbarrows; drive a maintenance truck; utilize a digital camera or smartphone to take photos; complete basic, fill-in reports; interact courteously and effectively with the public; follow oral and written directions; work different shifts as assigned.
License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
Environment: works outdoors in seasonal climate and weather conditions on surfaces that may be wet and slippery, where dirt, dust, fumes, and odors are frequently encountered. Required to drive motorized vehicles to various locations. Physical Abilities: hearing and speaking sufficient to exchange information in person or on the telephone; vision within normal range with or without correction; sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces; pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, reaching/stretching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, and stooping in the performance of daily activities; ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 lbs. Use hands to handle, feel, grasp or operate tools and equipment. Wear gloves and protective shoes and occasionally wear hazmat coverall suit. Hazards: exposure to heavy dust, dirt, pollen, odors, fumes, air contaminants, chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, discarded drug paraphernalia, and noise.
A combination of education, training, and/or experience equivalent to six months working in a related maintenance or groundskeeping position.
