The Tucson Water Department is seeking a qualified and dedicated individual to operate, maintain, repair, and monitor disinfection equipment while delivering the proper amount of disinfection chemicals into the potable water and reclaim water systems in the Water Quality and Operations Division.

General Description

Operates, maintains, repairs, and monitors the disinfection equipment to deliver the proper amount disinfection chemicals into the potable water and reclaim water systems. Transports liquid Sodium Hypochlorite throughout the Tucson Water service area.

Essential Functions

  • Handles, transports, and delivers liquid Sodium Hypochlorite throughout the City of Tucson water service area
  • Monitors chemical treatment injection equipment, makes repairs and operational decisions. Responds to alarms and emergencies.
  • Performs facility checks for any unusual operating conditions; monitors and controls equipment associated with chemical feed equipment and distribution for potable and non-potable water systems
  • Collects and analyzes data by collecting samples, reading meters and monitors. Performs field analyses on samples for various parameters, and utilizes judgment in determining when or if process changes are necessary.
  • Adjusts, repairs, cleans, overhauls, and maintains pumps, motors, and controls of chemical feed systems
  • Performs periodic operating checks of plant equipment such as injection systems, chemical feeders, auxiliary equipment, and measuring and control devices

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years experience repairing associated components related to hazardous chemical delivery such as pumps, motors, valves, piping, etc.

Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class C with HazMat and Tanker endorsement

Pursuant to Administrative Directive 6.01-8 Commercial Driver Policy: Incumbent employees may apply for a promotional opportunity if they meet all of the position requirements except for a CDL or required CDL endorsement. An employee who does not have the required license may be conditionally selected and advised of the requirement that they obtain the required license within 90 calendar days of the conditional notification of selection.

Candidates applying for positions carrying a CDL driving designation are required to obtain a valid Arizona CDL within 90 days of hire. The CDL must be of the appropriate classification, with endorsements as required by the job classification.

Failure to obtain the required CDL and endorsement within the required 90 calendar days will result in failure of probation and employment will be terminated effective immediately.  Failure to maintain the CDL thereafter will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Special Job Requirements

Required within 12-months of hire:

  • Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade 1 certification in Water Treatment
  • Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade 1 certification in Water Distribution 

The certifications are required within 12-months of hire. Failure to obtain the certification will result in failure of probation and employment will be terminated effective immediately.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a virtual Oral Board interview.

  • Oral Board Interviews will be held June 28, 2023  

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your oral board interview

Selection interviews may be conducted post-list by the hiring manager.

This recruitment will establish a Civil Service Eligibility List that will be utilized to fill all vacancies within Tucson Water occurring within the next 6 months.
