The Maintenance Division of the Tucson Water Department is seeking an experienced Water Utility Locator. This position is responsible for locating and marking the City's underground water and reclaim piping and components in order to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to construction excavation activities. Work requires exercise of initiative and independent judgment in effectively interpreting equipment readings and identifying system locations.

General Description

Determines and marks locations of underground water construction facilities using valve maps, geographic maps, construction plans, system as-builts, and electronic locating devices. Assures regulatory compliance by responding to AZ811 locate tickets and assists contractors, customers, and Tucson Water staff with projects.

Essential Functions

  • Locates and marks underground water facilities and provides assistance to customers by reviewing and prioritizing locate tickets, using maps and plans, specialized detection equipment and measuring devices, spray painting or marking the area with feathers, locating valves and mains, tracing service lines and troubleshooting problems.
  • Assists contractors with construction projects by receiving and reviewing maps and plans, attending pre-construction meetings, identifying underground lines, repainting destroyed locate marks, monitoring project schedules and resolving unexpected water problems.
  • Responds to and electronically files completed AZ811 locate tickets and logs activities.
  • Ensures that work conforms to local, state, and federal government regulations, worker safety and other applicable rules and regulations.
  • Acts as a first responder for emergencies, including assisting the fire Department with large fires.
  • Assists and coordinates with other utilities and agencies regarding locating and marking underground facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 4 years of professional experience using electronic locating equipment to locate and mark underground facilities/utilities

Valid and Unrestricted  Class D - Driver's License

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an oral board interview. 

  • Oral board interviews will be held June 29, 2023

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your rating for the virtual oral board interview

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring at Tucson Water within the next 6 months. Hiring interviews may be conducted post list and prior to final selections.
