Introduction


The Tucson Police Department invites applicants for the position of Community Service Officer (CSO). A CSO is a professional staff employee who provides operational support to community members in a law enforcement environment where a commissioned officer is not required. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with strong report-writing, investigative, and interviewing skills to serve the Tucson community and be a part of a growing, innovative law enforcement agency!

The Community Service Officer is responsible for assisting the Patrol Services Bureau by responding to requests for community assistance, completing investigations, compiling reports for minor non-injury traffic accidents and criminal damage. The position supports the Code Enforcement Division by responding to calls for assistance with city policy and procedure information for minor criminal offenses.  

This is an excellent opportunity to work for the Tucson Police Department. It is critical that candidates be aware and consider the following job elements before submitting an application:

  • Incumbents will be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Overtime will be required as necessary.
  • The training process is extensive; incumbents will attend an academy that is 9 weeks long and requires a high level of commitment and time dedication.
  • The probation period is 18 months.
  • Work is fast-paced and often stressful. It requires the ability to adjust quickly to changing job assignments and the ability to safeguard confidential information.
  • Incumbents will often be exposed to highly sensitive and graphic content to include written documentation, photos and other evidence collected as part of investigative reports.
  • This position requires the ability to safely drive both sedan and SUV-type vehicles during daylight and nighttime hours. This requirement also includes times of inclement weather.
  • Incumbents will be frequently exposed to severe weather conditions to include excessive heat and heavy rain.

The Hiring Process:

1. Complete City of Tucson Application by 5:00 pm on July 3, 2023.

3. Invitations sent to sign up for to the written exam scheduled for July 29, 2023.

4. If you pass the exam you will be notified by TPD HR and will continue with the next steps.

6. Extensive Background Investigation and Selection Process.

7. If you pass the Background Investigation and the Selection Process, you will be sent a conditional job offer.

8. Medical examination and drug screen.

9. If you pass the medical & drug screen, you will be sent a final job offer. 

10.  Academy starts on November 13, 2023.

General Description

Responds to and investigates non-emergency crimes, accidents, and dispatched calls.

Provides customer service.

Essential Functions

Investigates crimes by interviewing witnesses and victims, dusting for fingerprints, gathering, tagging and storing evidence, taking photographs, confirming status of stolen property, initiating recovery procedures, and preparing reports.

Responds to and investigates traffic accidents by securing the collision scene, clearing the roadway, interviewing drivers and witnesses, arranging for medical care if necessary, taking photographs, entering information into a computer and preparing reports.

Provides customer service by answering the telephone, recording and entering information into a computer, responding to requests for information, gathering information to complete police reports and referring callers to agencies and resources.

Recovers located property, enforces parking ordinances, testifies in court, provides training for new personnel, participates in missing person searches and directs traffic.

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: No experience

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver License

Selection Plan

Applicants who successfully complete an employment application, meet minimum qualifications, and successfully complete the Preliminary Applicant Questionnaire by 5:00 PM on July 3, 2023, will receive an invitation to the written exam. Invitations will be sent at a later date.

  • Written exam date will be on Saturday, July 29, 2023

An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service Eligibility List will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 100% of the rating for the Written Test 

This recruitment will establish a Civil Service Eligibility List that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next six months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Eligibility List. If you qualify for preference points as outlined in your Employment Profile, you must submit your documentation either in-person at the time of the Written Examination, upload to your COT application or send via email to TPD_HR@tucsonaz.gov. Copies of DD 214s must reflect a characterization of service.

Candidates placed on the Civil Service Eligibility List must successfully pass the following:

All probationary employees in this classification are subject to random drug screening during their EIGHTEEN MONTH PROBATIONARY PERIOD with the Tucson Police Department.
