The Control Systems Section of the Tucson Water Maintenance Division is seeking Industrial Electricians to perform skilled maintenance, repair, troubleshoot, and installation of industrial electrical and controls for 3-phase motors, for water production facilities. This position requires periodic work schedules that may include holidays, shift work and on-call status.

General Description

Industrial Electricians work independently or as a team to perform skilled journeyman electrical work in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of low, medium, and high voltage electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures in accordance with standards and practices in the electrical trade.

Essential Functions

  • Troubleshoots, maintains, and performs repairs to motor control centers for 3 phase 480v booster pumps and deep wells up to 700. Troubleshoots and has the ability to diagnose and connect 3 phase and single phase motors
  • Troubleshoots and repairs energized 480-volt circuits on Soft Starts , Variable Frequency Drives, and magnetic Motor Starters to determine causes of equipment malfunction.
  • Performs cable splicing for submersible 480v 3 phase motors up to 200HP
  • Installs electrical systems with or without blueprints, performs calculations involved in the proper sizing of conduit , transformers , electrical starters, and circuits in accordance with National Electrical Code standards and Regulations (NEC), OSHA and industry standards.
  • Able to read and interpret ladder logic & one-line motor control diagrams
  • Has the ability to perform Blue Stakes to locate underground utilities and service equipment
  • Maintains electrical equipment and industrial controls, AC/DC variable speed motors , variable frequency drives , and soft starts motor control centers
  • Makes recommendations on modifications to existing or new equipment and can coordinate with engineers and contractors required to make modifications to new or existing equipment
  • Organizes work orders and completes maintenance schedules; Performs scheduled inspections and performs proper preventative maintenance on all electrical equipment.
  • Performs calculations to determine parameter values for electronic start motor equipment as variable frequency drives, soft starts, and protection relays.
  • Diagnose cause of faulty operation, making necessary repairs and improvements to ensure system requirements of operation. 

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 month post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 4 years maintaining electrical equipment and control systems, at the skilled journey level

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Special Job Requirements

Some positions may require Certification to Service and Maintain Compactor Equipment and/or Commercial Contractor Examination for Electrical (commercial) L-11.

Positions at the Department of Transportation require a Class B CDL.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidates will possess the above minimum qualifications as well as have relevant experience in the areas of:

  • Repair and installation of industrial electrical and controls, troubleshooting 3-phase motors for water production facilities
  • At least 3 years maintaining electrical equipment and control systems, of at least 480v at the skilled journey level

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an in person Oral Board interview.   

  • In Person Oral Board Interviews will be held June 30, 2023  

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your oral board interview   

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that may be utilized to fill vacancies occurring at Tucson Water within the next 6 months.
