One of the great incentives of joining our team is the NEW Solid Waste Assignment Pay Tier Program. Operators may qualify for up to an additional $5.00 an hour of assignment pay. To receive this assignment pay you must maintain a valid Class A CDL and operate more than one piece of equipment. For additional information, contact the EGSD HR team.

General Description

Operates refuse collection equipment for the safe, efficient, and responsible collection, transportation, and disposal of refuse, trash, debris, and recyclables.

This job reports to: Environmental Services Supervisor

Essential Functions

Operates a variety of heavy and complex mechanical waste and recycling collection equipment on designated routes through city streets and alleys to include the safe disposal at the landfill and recycling facility.

Performs Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) pre- and post-trip inspections.

Observes and follows traffic laws, rules, and regulations.

Detects, identifies, and reports improper equipment performance and makes necessary operational adjustments. 

Maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, time and equipment used.

Provides customer service regarding collection concerns, general information, and/or problems related to collection services.

Occasionally trains staff in the safe use of refuse and recycling collection equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or GED 
Experience: At least 2 years operating heavy equipment for collecting solid waste   
Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class B or Class A 

Special Job Requirements

Class A CDL may be required for certain assignments 

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a Panel Board Interview

Panel Board Interview will take place: Tuesday, June 27, 2023

The highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience 
  • 90% of your rating for your panel board interview 

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.

Veteran, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  If you qualify for preference points as outlined in the Employment Profile, a copy of your documents can be emailed to EGSD_HR@tucsonaz.gov, uploaded to your application, or submitted in person. The DD 214 must be a copy that indicates characterization of service.
