The Tucson Water Department is seeking highly qualified individual to perform technical land survey work involved in preliminary, topographic, and construction field engineering surveys required for property and right-of-way determination, and to establish and maintain benchmarks and monuments.

General Description

Sets up and operates land survey equipment to measure land area boundaries and topographic features. Records field notes and calculations and interprets maps.

Essential Functions

Examples of essential duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Measuring land areas, boundaries, and topographical features, such as locating and establishing property corners, vertical and horizontal reference points, and line staking for construction projects
  • Utilizing static and RTK-GPS, total stations, electronic data collectors, and levels to measure and verify elevations, angles, and distances
  • Interpreting maps, plats, blueprints, and specifications
  • Clearing survey areas, locating markers, and setting pins, benchmarks, and monuments
  • Assisting in performing mathematical calculations
  • Preparing field notes and records of survey data, land features, as-built plans, and related engineering information
  • Cleaning, checking, and adjusting survey equipment to ensure accuracy of measurements

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year conducting land surveys

Valid and unrestricted driver’s license

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the above qualifications as well as knowledge and experience with the following: 
 
  • Knowledge of civil engineering and surveying terminology
  • Knowledge of construction procedures and techniques
  • Knowledge of job site safety practices and traffic control
  • Previous experience in a water utility 

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profiles and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an in-person Oral Board Interview.

  • Oral Board Interviews will be held march March 22, 2023

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List. An applicant's ranking on the List will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your oral board interview

This recruitment will establish a Civil Service Eligibility List that will be utilized to fill all vacancies occurring at Tucson Water within the next 6 months. Selection interviews may be conducted post-list by the hiring manager.
