Introduction



The Street Maintenance Division is seeking highly qualified, dedicated, dependable, and motivated individuals to join their team.  The Heavy  Equipment Operator position requires skilled work involving operation of heavy equipment to grade terrain within the City of Tucson right-of-way.  Other duties entail the application of asphalt and chip seal, hoisting large heavy objects, digging trenches, excavating tree stumps and sidewalks, sweeping and vacuuming streets and maintain landscaping.  Work requires climbing in and out of equipment and exposure to extremes in weather and temperatures.

General Description

Operates heavy equipment to maintain streets, roadways, drainage ways, and other City property.  Promotes the safe use of equipment, and transports equipment to job sites.

Essential Functions

Operates heavy equipment to perform grade terrain, application of asphalt and chip seal, hoisting large heavy objects, digging trenches, excavating tree stumps, and sidewalks, sweeping and vacuuming streets, and maintain landscaping.

Promotes the safe use of equipment by performing daily pre and post operation inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs to equipment, reporting any necessary repairs and instructing others.

Transports equipment by loading equipment on trailers and driving to various job sites

Performs routine maintenance in washes and drainage ways

Maintains asphalt surfaces to include street maintenance, pothole repairs, chip sealing and crack sealing

Operates small equipment such as jump jacks, chainsaws, and weed eater

Performs related duties such as occasionally directing helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers, or temporary employees and may temporarily act in a higher capacity

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years of heavy equipment operation

Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class B at time of application.  Copy of current/valid Class B CDL must be uploaded at time of application

Special Job Requirements

Must be able to obtain a Forklift Operator Certification within 12-month probationary period

Must have a valid and unrestricted CDL-Class B. Copy of CDL must be uploaded with application

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions.  The highest scoring applicants will be invited to participate in a Practical Skills Test and Written assessment.
  

The written assessment will be given prior to the Practical Skills Test, both will be conducted on the following date:

The Practical Skills Test will consist of an obstacle skills test. The Practical Skills Test will be outdoors.  You must wear loose-fitting work clothes suitable for an outdoor working environment.  Open toed footwear and shorts will not be allowed and excess jewelry is not recommended.  The required personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided.  


Upon completion of all processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as: 

    10% of your rating for education and work experience
    10% of your rating for written 
    80% of your rating for the practical skills test 
    

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months. 

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.
