ELECTRICIAN

The Department of Transportation is seeking qualified, dedicated, dependable, motivated and team-oriented professionals who will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, inspecting and installing electrical street lighting and traffic signal equipment. Maintains electrical equipment and control systems for City infrastructure primarily for roadway lighting and  traffic signal systems.  Performs limited electrical construction projects and/or repairs or modifications to existing electrical systems related to streetlights and traffic signals.

Examples of the essential duties may include:

Replace or repair circuitry, rebuilding and testing transformers, conductors and other components

Replace starting aids and breakers, troubleshooting and repairing conductors, wires and interconnected hardware

Drilling and tapping equipment and splicing electrical connections

Troubleshoot streetlight and traffic signal circuits, replace circuit conductors and cables, circuit breakers, fuses and associated hardware, including load centers, electric meter pedestals, and transformers, makes electrical splices and drills and taps signal poles to mount traffic signal equipment.

Transports and installs traffic signal and streetlight poles with installed height of up to 40 FT. Sets up traffic control including signs, barricades and traffic cones.

Troubleshoot streetlight and traffic signal circuits, replace circuit conductors and cables, circuit breakers, fuses and associated hardware, including load centers, electric meter pedestals, and transformers, makes electrical splices and drills and taps signal poles to mount traffic signal equipment.

In response to Arizona 811 (Formerly Arizona Blue Stake): Locates underground traffic signal and streetlight electrical conduit systems using electronic location devices, marks out locations, opens electrical pull boxes.

Responds to situations in which traffic signal or streetlight equipment has been damaged due to motor vehicle accidents, or during excavations by other agencies performing utility repair or construction. Ensures traffic signal and streetlight wiring is made safe, removes, scraps or salvages damaged traffic signal and street lighting equipment

Inform contractors of how repairs of damaged equipment should be handled according to City specifications

Respond to accidents involving electrical equipment as requested by other departments

Ensure electrical wires and components are safe, removes and salvages equipment and components at the scene and returns equipment to the shop for disposal or repair

Inspects, informs and advises contractors during repairs to or construction of traffic signal and streetlight equipment and ensures City of Tucson Standard Specifications are implemented. Checks light pole foundations, anchor bolts, conduit depth, electrical splices/connections, takes measurements and creates punch lists.

Works in or near vehicle and pedestrian traffic at all hours and all weather conditions. Operates bucket trucks up to 45 FT working height, cranes, digger derrick, pick up trucks, air compressors.

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 month post High School, proof of education will be required

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 4 years maintaining electrical equipment and control systems, at the skilled journey level

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Class B - CDL is required within 90 days of hire*

*The Department of Transportation & Mobility partners with Pima Community College to provide CDL training for qualified candidates to assist them in meeting this CDL criteria.

Required to participate in traffic signal and streetlight 24 hour on-call / standby rotation roster.

Basic computer skills such as MS Word, Excel and e-mail system.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants may then be invited to participate in a virtual Interview process.

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

• 10% of your rating for education and work experience
• 90% of your oral board interview   

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.
