Introduction


The Fleet Services Division of the Environmental and General Services Department (EGSD) is looking for highly skilled mechanics to perform preventive maintenance and repairs on heavy duty vehicles such as: front-end loader, side loader, rear loader and heavy equipment.

General Description

Performs preventive maintenance and repairs of heavy vehicles and equipment. Rebuilds and installs engines and makes service calls.

Essential Functions

This position is for SECOND shift from 1:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. with shift differential pay of $1.00/hr for hours worked between 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Performs preventative maintenance by replacing fluids and filters in equipment, measuring, adjusting and recording test results, cleaning and replacing components in equipment, checking and adjusting components and ensuring equipment is in proper operating condition.

Repairs equipment and makes service calls by diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing and replacing defective parts and components, investigating malfunctions and breakdowns, installing new parts and components and welding and fabricating parts as needed.

Rebuilds and installs diesel, gasoline and natural gas engines by disassembling, inspecting, measuring and evaluating internal and external engine parts, ordering parts, reassembling and installing engines, verifying clearance and tolerance and making adjustments as necessary.

Interprets and applies information from technical manuals and web sites.

Tests equipment in accordance with technical requirements.

Prepares reports, requisitions and work orders and maintains records.

Maintains shop by cleaning, degreasing shop areas, painting and labeling equipment and promoting safety procedures.

Contains and safely disposes of hazardous wastes.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 4 years maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding heavy and specialized trucks, construction, and street maintenance equipment

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Special Job Requirements

The position requires Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) Certification within 12 months of hire. Failure to obtain certification will result in failure of probation and employment will terminate effective immediately.

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions.  Applicants who successfully meet the minimum qualifications will then be invited to participate in a practical skills test.

Practical skills test will be held on February 22, 2023.

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:
  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your rating for practical skills test

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.
