Introduction

 

The City of Tucson Planning and Development Services Department seeks multiple Construction Inspectors to join our customer-centric culture providing strategic, timely, quality planning and development services to an engaged public. The Construction Inspector provides inspection activities related to the development of private property for compliance with applicable engineering, landscaping, and zoning codes and standards. The position receives direction from the Construction Inspection Supervisor and consults with other staff for design changes or project clarifications.

There are immediate openings in the Current Planning Division. Current Planning staff process, review, and inspect site development proposals, sign permits, and special zoning applications.

The successful candidates are expected to work the majority of the time in the field but may spend some time in the office. This position may be eligible for alternative work schedules depending on Department needs and supervisor approval.

General Description

Coordinates inspections of construction sites to ensure compliance with contracts, standards, and specifications. Creates and maintains documentation of site findings.

Essential Functions

  • Occasionally directs helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees and may temporarily act in a higher capacity.
  • Conducts job site inspections by making daily visits to active construction projects, reviewing progress, measuring and calculating for contract items, monitoring activities, enforcing codes and processes, and investigating complaints.

  • Supervises sites by planning, organizing, and overseeing inspection activities, coordinating with contractors and inspectors, and ensuring conformance with contract specifications.
  • Interprets engineering documents, compiles reports and documentation, reviews pay estimates, and provides monthly estimates to contractors.
  • Closes projects by coordinating final work site inspection, providing a list of items that need completing, generating final quantities and pay estimates, and completing final documentation.
  • Overseeing system connections and conducts tests.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: 4 years and over inspecting construction projects for compliance with applicable building and engineering codes and standards  

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License 

An equivalent combination of experience, education, and training related to the essential duties which provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the above minimum qualifications as well as have relevant experience in any of the areas of:

  • Cross-discipline communication regarding construction activities
  • Design, review, or inspection experience with site development
  • Municipal engineering, landscaping, or zoning inspections
  • Landscape inspections related to species identification
  • Rainwater harvesting design, techniques, and best practices

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a virtual Teams Oral Board interview.   

  • Virtual Teams Oral Board Interviews will be held the week of March 13, 2023

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your oral board interview   

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that may be utilized to fill vacancies occurring in this classification within the next 6 months.
