Introduction

The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is looking for charismatic and energetic

THERAPEUTIC PROGRAM COORDINATORS

to assist with Therapeutic Recreation / Inclusion Programs

General Description

This is a non-permanent position that works on an intermittent basis.

Individuals in this classification may not exceed 1,300 hours in a 12-month period.

Therapeutic Program Coordinators provide services to the participants of the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation facilities and programs. They are responsible for facilitation of training and communication related to inclusion support and ADA accommodations in recreation programs. Communication and collaboration are key skills. This position works in collaboration with staff to plan activities, prepare facilities for scheduled functions, and work with and support participants with disabilities.

During the school year, hours will be afternoons and evening. In the summer months, primary camp hours are from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. Teen Camps are from 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm. This is a part time job during the school year with full time options in summer months.

These are only examples and shifts are assigned as needed.

Essential Functions

Works with children, teens, and adults with disabilities in a variety of recreational programs including social clubs, summer camps, and after-school programs, and inclusion sites

Provides leadership and supervision of Senior Recreation Workers, Recreation Workers, and Volunteers

Works in conjunction with staff and volunteers in the planning and implementation of structured recreational activities including but not limited to arts and crafts, games, sports, fitness, and creative expression

Must have knowledge of disabilities, person centered approaches and therapeutic recreation and/or special education, human growth and development  

Experience must include adapting programs for individuals with disabilities as well as creating and implementing behavior plans

Ensures the safety of program participants by enforcing discipline and behavior policies

Supports safety programs by adhering to policies and procedures, and reporting accidents and hazardous conditions immediately to a supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year supervisory experience in organizing and coordinating seasonal recreation programs and activities for individuals with disabilities

Special Job Requirements

All candidates must be able to obtain CPR/First Aid certification and pass a background check upon hire

Position requires an unrestricted driver's license with at least 24 months of licensed driving experience

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will be invited to participate in an Oral Board Interview.

  • Oral Board Interviews will be held: the week of October 10, 2022 

The highest scoring applicants will be placed in the "Best Qualified" and "Qualified" band (grouping) and provided to the hiring department for selection decision. An applicant's placement on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 20% of your rating for Training and Experience
  • 80% of your Oral Board Interview
