The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a highly qualified, dedicated, team-oriented


to assist with maintaining and repairing the Parks and Recreation 20 pools and 6 splash playgrounds.

The value of this position is ensuring these recreation amenities are available for the public to enjoy swimming, fitness, and escaping the heat.

General Description

The Parks and Recreation Trade Specialist installs, maintains, and repairs commercial aquatics equipment at City Pools and Splash Pads, including chlorination or bromine systems, backwash systems, filtration pumps, motors, heaters, boilers, plumbing pipe and fittings. Monitors water quality through water chemical balance and other duties assigned for operational needs.

This position requires a work shift or Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday, to include some holidays. In addition, position rotated through a two week on-call schedule.

Essential Functions

Maintains and repairs aquatic facilities by performing inspections, taking water samples, troubleshooting issues, repairing broken equipment or fixtures, maintaining grounds, caring for tools, and picking up litter

Installs new equipment and materials for facilities through planning, layout, and assembly

Maintain parts and equipment inventory on service vehicle and in storage warehouse

Transports materials, equipment, and pool chemical supplies

Cleans work areas, responds to emergencies, cleans up storm damage and performs safety checks on equipment

Test water daily to maintain / meet commercial water quality standards by chemical application, adjustments or settings. Monitors chlorination and bromine equipment

Responsible for understanding pool chemical safety of, but not limited to: Chlorine gas, chlorine granular, bromine, caustics, acids, calcium, sodium bicarbonate, etc.

Utilizes and maintains a variety of hand and power tools such as but not limited to; hammers, open /boxed end wrenches, pipe wrench, pliers, screwdrivers, ratchet, sockets, files, hand power drills, saw zaws, blower, bolt cutters, shears, loppers, and trimming knives

Operates 1/2, 3/4, 1-ton pickup truck, hydraulic lift gate truck, portable pool vacuum

Maintains daily work activity task with the use of I Phone and Cartegraph management system

Take annual training classes online and in person

Train onboarding personnel in safety regulations and the use of tools and equipment

Occasionally directs helpers or temporary employees in the performance of daily task. May also temporarily act in a higher capacity

Must work independently and with minimal supervision

Maintain CDL, Hazmat endorsement, and Respirator Fit Test. Obtain Aquatics Facility Operators certificate

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years of experience in maintaining pools and aquatics equipment, or maintaining and repairing facilities and equipment, or pruning, trimming, transplanting, and treating trees and shrubs, or installing and maintaining irrigation systems.

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Special Job Requirements

Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class B  required for Construction Maintenance Specialists, and Tree Stewards based on the weight of the vehicle and/or the transportation of HazMat

Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class C required for Aquatics Maintenance Specialist based on the weight of the vehicle and/or the transportation of HazMat

Respiratory Fit Test

Pursuant to A.D. 6.01-8 Commerical Driver Policy

Incumbent employees may apply for a promotional opportunity if they meet all of the position requirements except for a CDL or required CDL endorsement. An employee who does not have the required license may be conditionally selected and advised of the requirement that they obtain the required license within 90 calendar days of the conditional notification of selection. Failure to obtain the required license and endoresement within this time frame will result in the removal of the conditional selection offer. 

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarization with swimming pool chemicals (i.e. chlorine products, sodium hydroxide, acids, alternate sanitizers, speciality chemicals, etc.)

Training in utliization of chlorine and bromine/ozone equipment

Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification preferred

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in the following assessments:  

  • Virtual Oral Board Interviews will be held: the week of October 10, 2022
  • Written Assignment will be held: the week of October 17, 2022

Upon completion of all examination processes, applicants who recieve a passing score will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 20% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 20% for your written assignment  
  • 60% of your oral board interview   

This recruitment will establish a Civil Service Employment List that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.
