The Department of Transportation - Engineering Division is seeking qualified, dedicated, dependable, motivated and team-oriented professional who will be responsible for maintaining, organizing and archiving of  Engineering Division documents as well as creating computer drafted drawings with ability to interpret engineering plans and survey records.  Answer right-of-way and additional engineering questions from staff and the public.

General Description

This is a senior position that provides assistance to staff and the public by the creation and maintaining of engineering drawings, maps, and presentation materials. Conducts research, and provides information to the public and staff personnel.

Essential Functions

This position differs from other positions in the classification series by performing tasks at a proficient, accomplished level and handling the more difficult, complex or irregular tasks. Individuals in senior positions typically assist in setting priorities for work and are asked upon occasion to use judgment to solve unusual problems.

The job duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:

Creates Computer-Aided Drafting drawings for the Department, including supplemental engineering plans, record documents and records of survey.  Software used includes AutoCAD, Carlson and Adobe

Maintaining the Geographic Information System (GIS) data on Map Tucson and the Transportation electronic databases.  This includes creation of new plan numbers in the departments record system, placing images in databases and placement of geo-referenced link on Map Tucson using AutoCAD

Answers right-of-way or other engineering related questions.  This requires research of on-line and physical records and interpreting these plans/documents

Responding to Public Record Requests

Answers technical questions from the public, including inquiries regarding street maintenance

Organizes and indexes electronic and physical documents for the Engineering Division of the Transportation Department.

Assist individuals to access division records via on-line tools and answer records questions

Assist in engineering or survey research.  This varies from location of right-of-way to determine position of drainage structures

Conducts engineering or survey related calculations

Assist in maintaining the Department of Transportation web pages

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Associate's Degree

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years computer-aided drafting in geographic information systems, survey engineering, Computer-Aided Drafting, Engineering, Geographic Information Systems, transportation or related field.

**An  equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position may be considered**

Preferred Qualifications

Engineering-in Training (EIT) certification

Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) certification

Knowledge of Tucson Department of Transportation plans

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a oral board interview.

The highest ranking applicants from the phone screen process will be invited to an oral board interview.

  • Oral Board Interviews will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.  

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List.  An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your oral board interview

This position requires a satisfactory Criminal Background Check and Motor Vehicle History Report.  Reference checks may also be conducted prior to an offer of employment.  Employment offers are contingent upon successfully passing any of the above requirements.

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D, or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
