Introduction

This is a non-permanent position. It is designed and intended to provide entry level work experience for students who meet the minimum qualification. This position will have a work schedule of approximately 15-20 hours per week; scheduling is flexible and may be tailored to class schedules or other activities. No benefits are offered with this position and non-permanent employees may not work more than 1,300 hours per fiscal year. This internship is structured to be a one-year assignment, with a one-year renewal possible upon agreement between the Information Technology Department and intern.

General Description

Assists professional staff by conducting research, collecting data, designing workflows and writing scripts for use in GIS projects with various City departments. This position will be ‘forward-facing,’ working closely with other City departments and public. Therefore, someone comfortable working on teams and with other people is required.

Essential Functions

This position will work in the ArcGIS platform to:

Collaborate with City departments to improve work processes.

Build web and desktop applications that allow City staff and the public to access data and perform geospatial analysis.

Build out the City’s ArcGIS Open Data platform with metadata and more user-friendly ways for users to discover and interact with this data.

Clean and organize the City’s ArcGIS Online and Enterprise platforms.

Work with professional staff to document processes and procedures for building web applications.

Help coordinate trainings for applications such as MapTucson, ArcGIS Online, Qlik BI tools and ArcGIS Pro.

Create how-to videos to supplement trainings.

Special Job Requirements

Must have junior or senior standing and be enrolled in a four-year degree program, or be enrolled in the last semester of a two-year degree program, or be enrolled in a graduate program, or be enrolled in college level coursework and have special measurable technical skills. Must have a letter of recommendation from an instructor at the educational institute in which they are currently enrolled. Must have a current cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (Student may submit copy of last grade report with cumulative GPA) 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Esri GIS Software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise)

Familiarity with enterprise and file-based geodatabases

Comfort building web-based map applications using HTML5, CSS and JavaScript

Experience working with customers to build data products (maps, visualizations) that meet or exceed their expectations

Works well on teams and has the ability to take direction from co-workers
