The Planning and Engineering Division of the Tucson Water Department is seeking dedicated, motivated, and team-oriented individuals to provide construction inspection of water infrastructure projects.  Construction Inspectors would oversee all types of water infrastructure projects throughout Tucson Water’s system and are expected to exercise independent judgment in managing construction activities and conflict resolution. The position requires the ability to work nights, and holidays with advance notice.

General Description

Coordinates inspections of construction sites to ensure compliance with contracts, standards, and specifications. Creates and maintains documentation of site findings.

Essential Functions

The essential duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts job site inspections by making daily visits to water infrastructure construction projects, monitors, and measures activities and progress, enforces compliance with approved plans and specifications, investigates complaints, and completes final inspections of projects
  • Works directly with other contractors, other agencies and jurisdictions, internal staff, and customers to coordinate on-site construction activities to complete the project and minimize public impact
  • Conducts meetings, interprets engineering and surveying documents, compiles daily reports, documents plan revisions, and reviews pay estimates.
  • Closes projects by coordinating final work site inspections, compiling punchlists, computing final quantities and pay estimates, and completing final documentation.
  • Oversees performance and water quality testing necessary for compliance with project specifications and for regulatory compliance.
  • Works directly with Tucson Water Divisions to coordinate water system service interruptions

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: 4 years and over inspecting construction projects for compliance with applicable building and engineering codes and standards  

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License 

An equivalent combination of experience, education, and training related to the essential duties which provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the above minimum qualifications as well as have relevant experience in the areas of:

  • ADEQ Certified Water Operator
  • Experience working with water utility systems
  • Inspection, surveying, and construction experience
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret schematics and as-builts as it relates to water utility or closely related systems
  • Experience inspecting water related construction projects for compliance with applicable plans, specifications, and contract documents

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a virtual Teams Oral Board interview.   

  • Virtual Teams Oral Board Interviews will be held January 6, 2022

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your oral board interview   

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that may be utilized to fill vacancies occurring at Tucson Water within the next 6 months.
