Introduction

The City of Tucson Transportation Department is seeking a qualified applicant to join our diverse, vibrant, progressive and engaged workforce. This position leads construction personnel in building, installing, repairing and replacing concrete structures, block walls, pavers, bollards, fences and rails. In addition, this position will compile and maintain related information, as well as complete reporting requirements.

General Description

Leads construction personnel in building, installing, repairing and replacing concrete structures, block walls, pavers, bollards, fences and rails.

Essential Functions

This is a lead position affording guidance to other positions performing the same tasks.  This lead position also reviews workloads, assigns work and coaches employees with specialized instructions and practices for job accomplishments.  Lead personnel may contribute to other employees' performance evaluations, assist with the hiring process by interviewing and making recommendations and providing input to supervisory staff.

Repairs damaged concrete by removing the existing damaged area, setting concrete grade and forms, pouring and finishing concrete, setting barricades, removing forms and backfilling, and disposing of any generated debris.

Removes and resets sidewalk pavers.

Repairs and installs bollards by removing the damaged bollard, digging holes, and setting bollards to grade in concrete.

Repairs and replaces fences and rails by removing and replacing the damaged fence, rail and hardware, and installing fence, rail and hardware in concrete.

Operates concrete chop saw, walk-behind saw, tile and brick cutter, six and ten yard dump trucks, and crane truck to perform concrete work and miscellaneous manual work.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience and Qualifications: At least 4 years of experience building, installing, repairing, and replacing concrete structures, block walls, sidewalk pavers, bollards, and fences and rails at the skilled journey level

Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class B

Class B - CDL is required within 90 days of hire

Special Job Requirements

This Position at the Department of Transportation require a Class B CDL. The successful candidate will be required to have a Class B CDL within 90 days of hire.

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an assessment process to include a written exam and oral board interview.

Candidates with a passing score on written exam will move forward to the oral board interview.

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your rating on oral board interview

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.
