The Tucson Police Department is seeking skilled and dedicated individuals to provide administrative and investigative support to the Background Investigations Unit in direct support of law enforcement operations.

This is a non-permanent position that will work on an intermittent or seasonal basis.  Individuals in this classification may not exceed 1,300 hours per fiscal year (1 July - 30 June).  Non-Permanent appointees do not receive benefits, and their appointment may be terminated at any time without notice or right of appeal.

Retired City of Tucson employees receiving benefits from the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System or Tucson Supplemental Retirement System who are considering reemployment with the City should be aware that pursuant to Section 22-37(g) of the Tucson City Code, retirement benefits shall be suspended during the period of reemployment with the City of Tucson unless you have been separated at least twelve consecutive months before returning to work AND you return to a non-permanent employment classification. Creditable service does not accrue during any reemployment period.

General Description

This position provides administrative and/or investigative support within the Human Resources Division, Background Investigations Unit, in direct support of law enforcement operations.

Essential Functions

Performs employment background screening or relevant investigative work.

Develops and analyzes information from formal interviews, as well as information derived and developed from law enforcement systems, public domain data bases, social media websites, etc.

Researches criminal justice information and collects pertinent documents, analyzes evidence, and writes reports for review/action.

Performs clerical duties including typing and filing, updating and maintaining security on sensitive files

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 3 years performing employment background screening or relevant investigative work which includes developing evidence via formal interviews, utilization of information contained in restrictive or sensitive data bases, collection of pertinent documents, analyzing evidence, and writing reports.

Ability to obtain ACJIS Network Terminal Operator certification within 30 days of hire.

Special Job Requirements

Initiates and receives telephone calls from the public to investigate and interview to obtain information required for the Police Department to make informed selection decisions regarding candidates for employment.

No felony convictions or drug abuse

Preferred Qualifications

Five (5) years of previous satisfactory experience as a commissioned officer in a paid status with the Tucson Police Department.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT:

To be considered for this position, you must submit a completed application.

Those applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions.  Will be sent to the hiring department for a selection process.

Applicants will then be sent a questionnaire and upon completion will be placed on a list and will be subject to the following:

  • An extensive background investigation, including local, state and national criminal and fingerprint checks    
  • Driving History
  • A polygraph examination to verify information you have supplied in the background questionnaire 
  • Selected candidates will receive a conditional job offer and must successfully pass pre-employment medical.
