Introduction

The Tucson Police Department's Analysis Division is using data and analysis to identify trends and inform policing strategies. This is an exciting opportunity to take your technical skills and apply them to support better policing practices and making Tucson a safer community. Relevant skills include critical thinking, statistics, GIS analysis, and qualitative research. This position is responsible for leveraging data to provide analysis by way of technical reports and visualizations.

General Description

Performs advanced research and data analysis while utilizing complex methodologies and statistical techniques.

The class performs related duties as required.

Essential Functions

Conducts complex trend/pattern/series analyses using quantitative, qualitative, and spatial measures and methods.

Develops research methods, including problem statements, background research, and methodological design.

Uses advanced statistical, spatial, and database software to collect, analyze, and compile information for the development and dissemination of analytical products.

Evaluates and assesses peer-reviewed literature and other technical reports for applicability to the Section.

Conducts advanced data collection and extraction from police-related databases to critically evaluate data; assess the value of the data; synthesizes compiled data into a logical framework, draws inferences, and prepares comprehensive reports and presentations to enhance the information provided to appropriate department personnel.

Participates in the design of analytical products and implementation of statistical techniques that provide thorough data analytics to support data-driven decisions.

Participates in the development and implementation of strategies against recognized criminal trends as well as crime analysis principles, methods, and functions.

Participates in the development and maintenance of the application of computer programs to analysis efforts.

Participates in resource allocation studies; supports analysis of policing strategies and provides recommendations; supports survey implementation and analyses efforts, research projects, and program evaluation studies.  

Supports data-integration models and the Department’s vision by collecting and analyzing data in a timely and accurate basis; provides detailed trend analysis reports regarding findings.

Participates with training of new section personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor’s Degree

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least two (2) years of experience in applied social science research.

Selection Plan

Applicants who successfully complete an employment application, meet minimum qualifications, and successfully complete the Preliminary Applicant Questionnaire by 5:00 PM (Arizona time) on October 11, 2021 will then be invited to participate in a writing sample.

  • Writing sample will be held the week of October 18, 2021

Top scoring applicants who successfully pass the practical assessment will be invited to participate in an virtual oral board interview.

  • Virtual Oral Board Interviews will be held November 17 - 18, 2021 

Applicants invited to the virtual oral board interview will be invited to participate via Microsoft Teams. Applicants will need to ensure they have a web camera, microphone, and a reliable internet connection to participate in the virtual oral board interview process. 

Upon completion of the examination process, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List. An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 20% of your rating for your writing sample
  • 70% of your oral board

Hiring interviews may be conducted.

The Eligibility List may be used by the department with an approved vacancy to fill in the next 6 months. Selection will be made in accordance with CSR III, Section 2. The list of employees eligible for consideration will remain in effect for 6 months after their names are provided to the hiring authorities. Examination results and current status will be communicated by email.  

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  If you qualify for preference points as outlined in the Employment Profile, you must upload your documentation as part of the application process or email it to demetria.lopez@tucsonaz.gov. The DD 214 must be a copy that indicates characterization of service.

Driving Requirements

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
