The City of Tucson is seeking a GIS Technician to participate in various GIS projects in support of the Environmental and General Services Department's (EGSD) infrastructure by coordinating GIS data, and information that has specific division, department, and city-wide implications. The GIS technician is responsible for all aspects of GIS data entry and map production. GIS Technicians read and interpret source software such as Routeware, Infor, EAM and Naviline and enter required data into the GIS database.

 

General Description

Responsible for all aspects of GIS data entry and map production. Reads and interprets source documents such as civil engineering plans, plot maps and legal descriptions and enters required data into the GIS database.

Essential Functions

Updates and maintains GIS databases using ArcGIS and other GIS related software.

Assists in developing and implementing GIS applications for database maintenance and map output.

Generates various GIS products for engineering, planning and research projects.

Uses GIS applications to query, analyze, display and interpret department GIS databases.

Performs quality control of GIS attribute and spatial data. Converts paper and CAD data into a GIS format.

Inventory Management / Asset Management / Warranties

Provides customer service by responding to e-mail, investigating discrepancies, and providing information and technical advice to internal customers and other city departments.

Maintains maps in GIS or ArcGIS

Utilizes GIS Software ArcMap to plot new routes , edit routes and add work orders into GIS database.

Makes use of Enterprise CIS and EAM systems, as well as other software products to perform research.

Maintains EGSD web-based Asset database to track work orders, as-built plans, and legal descriptions.

Researches, reads, and interprets annexation related documents including subdivisions, improvement plans, legal descriptions, and County Assessor records.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor's Degree

Minimum Experience Qualification: Under 1 year of experience with GIS software and micro languages, knowledge of automated mapping and GIS including ESRI's ArcGIS software, GIS relational database issues, general database concepts, theory and principles of GIS software manipulation, usage requirements and analysis of system outputs and computer system operations

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the above minimum qualifications as well as relevant experience in the areas listed below:

  • Over one (1) year of experience with GIS software and query languages, knowledge of automated mapping and GIS including ESRI's ArcGIS software, GIS relational database issues, general database concepts, theory and principles of GIS software manipulation, usage requirements and analysis of system outputs and computer system operations
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS, MS-Office, Customer Information Systems, Enterprise Asset Management Systems, Autodesk, CAD, and GIS-related computer applications
  • Experience researching and working with work orders, legal descriptions, etc.
  • Experience working with Environmental & General Services Department standard specifications and details
  • Experience working with solid waste routing systems

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a Panel Board interview.   

  • Panel Board Interviews will be held: Week of November 8, 2021

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 20% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 80% of your panel board interview   

Hiring interviews may be conducted.

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  If you qualify for preference points as outlined in the Employment Profile, you must upload your documentation as part of the application process or email it to EGSD_HR@tucsonaz.gov.
