Introduction

General Description

Provides technical and engineering support through the review and implementation of traffic engineering projects and plans by supporting the following areas:

Capital and private improvement projects:   Under direction of  the supervisor, a Traffic Engineering Technician provides technical support through the review and implementation of projects and plans. A technician reviews signing and striping plans for compliance with standards for private and capital improvement projects.  The technician conducts project field inspections, determining project conflicts, noting compliance with plans and standards, and identifying and resolving engineering discrepancies.

Investigation:  Under direction of a supervisor, a Traffic Engineering Technician investigates, analyzes and resolves complaints that come from the general public, Ward offices, other agencies, and other City departments.  The investigation may involve reviewing maps, plans, photographs, records, service requests, and crash history.  In addition, a technician conducts field reviews to determine conditions, measure distances, evaluate issues, and identify signing and striping treatments to address concerns.  A technician prepares work orders for the Sign Shop and Paint Shop for installation of the identified treatments. A work order can involve preparation of maps, drawings, sketches and layouts to succinctly and clearly convey work being requested.  

Traffic Studies:    A Traffic Engineering Technician conducts field studies of traffic conditions, including conducting traffic counts, traffic observations, measuring distances, and measuring traffic speeds.  A Traffic Engineering Technician will summarize study results in the appropriate format.  

Essential Functions

Reviews, assists with designs and contributes to projects and plans by conducting field reviews, determining project conflicts, noting plan compliance problems when discovered, preparing responses to inquiries regarding requirements, attending and helping to coordinate events and meetings, assisting with the review of private and capital improvement development projects and identifying and resolving engineering discrepancies.

Investigates, analyzes and resolves complaints, discrepancies and problems, determines and evaluates field visibility hazards, rectifies problems, conducts studies, enforces codes and standards, writes notifications, issues citations and works with other departments.

Prepares service requests and maps, creates drawings, charts and layouts, maintains accident engineering records, produces diagrams from reports, analyzes data, writes memos and correspondence, researches official documents, meets with City officials and citizens and reviews reports.

Reviews and responds to service requests by reviewing location histories, records, maps, photographs and blueprints, performing field reviews of locations, determining and initiating corrective actions, entering information into the database, responding to requests, updating records and creating instruction diagrams.

Surveys locations, conducts, analyzes and recommends engineering studies, coordinates with other agencies, testifies in depositions and court, conducts random inspections, maintains records and coordinates safety improvements, prepares and receives technical drawings and develops educational materials and presentations.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Associate's Degree

Minimum Experience Qualifications: Under 1 year of traffic engineering support and computer assisted design 

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

 

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position may be considered

Special Job Requirements

Traffic Control Certification will be needed prior to completing probation in this classification

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an oral board interview.

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List.  An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as: 

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience 
  • 90% of your oral board interview.

The list may be used by any City department with an approved vacancy to fill in the next 6 months. Selection will be made in accordance with CSR III, Section 2. Conclusion

This position requires a satisfactory Criminal Background Check and Motor Vehicle History Report.  Reference checks may also be conducted prior to an offer of employment.  Employment offers are contingent upon successfully passing any of the above requirements.

The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
