Introduction



The City of Tucson's Business Services Department, Risk Management Division, Safety Group is seeking a qualified, experienced, and highly motivated Safety Specialists to join its team. This position will be responsible for coordinating occupational safety and health components and engaging employees throughout City of Tucson departments.

General Description

The Safety Specialist is responsible for coordinating and supporting safety goals, initiatives and activities both internally within the team and externally with other City departments.

Essential Functions

Performs safety training for the department in accordance with 29CFR 1910 OSHA's General Industry Standards, other nationally recognized compliance standards or manufacturer's equipment guidelines which may include administering hands on drivers training skill testing.

Conducts incident investigations by determining the nature and cause of injury, illness or accidents and making recommendations for correction of deficiencies and/or corrective action plans in accordance with associated rules, regulations or directives.

Obtains mandated certifications when relevant to department functions by attending training sessions and seminars to keep current on regulations as they pertain to safety and health, to include new ideas and techniques in accident prevention, loss control and compliance based safety programs as they relate to 29CFR 1910 OSHA's General Industry Standards, other nationally recognized compliance standards or manufacturer's equipment guidelines.

Serves as liaison for both the Risk Management division with the department of Finance and Central Safety Services division with the Human Resources department on safety related matters by conducting safety and work practice observations and studies, recommending and implementing changes to improve employee safety, and developing procedures in consultation with the appropriate division.

Develops and performs safety compliance inspections by conducting vehicle inspections to ensure D.O.T. compliance, and conducting facility inspections to ensure OSHA compliance. Coordinates with Central Safety Services or regulatory agencies to attend meetings/classes to keep current of safety related issues, training classes or new techniques.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Associate's Degree

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 3 years implementing occupational safety and health compliance programs

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Relevant experience in lieu of education will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the minimum qualifications identified above, the ideal candidate will also possess the following:

  • Professional OSHA 501 General Industry Trainer Certification.
  •  Experience conducting training in person and virtually.
  •  Experience conducting ergonomic evaluations.
  •  Experience conducting industrial hygiene assessments.
  •  Experience in writing safety, health, and environmental report

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a Written Exam and Oral Board Interview which will include a 5-7 min presentation. The presentation subject will be given to candidates 48-72 hours prior to interview.

It is important to note that the City of Tucson uses Microsoft TEAMS for its virtual interview and testing process. Please ensure you have access to this software application.

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as: 

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 20% of your written exam
  • 20% of your presentation
  • 50% of your oral board interview
Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.
