The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is looking for enthusiastic and energetic

LIFEGUARDS

to work at the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation swimming pools.

General Description

This is a non-permanent position that will work on an intermittent or seasonal basis.

Individuals in this classification may not exceed 1,300 hours in a 12-month period.

Other than Earned Paid Sick Time, non-permanent appointees do not received benefits and their appointment may be terminated at any time without notice or right of appeal.

Lifeguards are responsible for the safety of the patrons at the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation swimming pools. A lifeguard's major responsibility is to observe swimmers and enforce regulations in the guarding of life and the prevention of accidents at the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation swimming pools.

Essential Functions

REQUIRED SKILLS:

A lifeguard must have knowledge of water hazards, lifesaving techniques and first aide, recognize hazardous situations, and adopt effective courses of action. A lifeguard must also have effective communication skills and engage positively with the public. While performing the duties of this position, a lifeguard is frequently required to sit, kneel, stand stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. This position requires mobility. Duties require attentiveness to visual and audible cues for recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or in process of unsafe behavior. This position requires proficient swimming ability and the proper application of rescue and first-aid techniques.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Rescue persons in distress or in danger of drowning

Applies resuscitation techniques and otherwise renders first aid Observes swimmers to ensure they adhere to swimming pool rules and maintains order

Keeps the pool area clean and clear of debris, trip hazards, or other possible injury hazards

Maintains pool equipment and ensures the proper sanitation of pool and bathhouse facilities

Meets and deals with the public in a positive and firm manner

Warns swimmers of improper activities or hazards

Notifies supervisors of any accidents, rescues, or problems that arise

Report any equipment in need of repair

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Less than High School

Minimum Experience and Qualifications: No experience

Special Job Requirements

At least 15 years of age by June 20, 2021

Experience swimmers and available to work required hours/locations

American Red Cross Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification

The above certification is a perquisite for the City of Tucson Lifeguard Certification.

Selection Plan

Applicants should have knowledge of contact skills, including defense, approach, escapes, carries without equipment, ability to turn c-spine victims in deep water, and swim to side 300" without equipment. Lifeguard screening consist of rescue skills, swimming, first aid, and CPR in practical and oral interviews.
