The Planning & Engineering Division of the Tucson Water Department is looking for highly qualified, dedicated, dependable, motivated and team-oriented individual to direct and review land surveys as required for property and right-of-way determinations and construction layout, benchmarks and verification and future reference for construction projects.

General Description

Directs and reviews land surveys required for property and right-of-way determinations and construction layout, benchmarks and verification and future reference for construction projects.  Trains and leads a survey crew.

Essential Functions

  • This is a lead position affording guidance to other positions performing the same tasks.  This lead position also reviews workloads, assigns work and coaches employees with specialized instructions and practices for job accomplishments. 
  • Lead personnel may contribute to other employees' performance evaluations, assist with the hiring process by interviewing and making recommendations and providing input to supervisory staff.
  • Plans, organizes, and coordinates field surveys by reviewing work orders, plans, and legal descriptions, organizing field work activities, and researching legal and survey documents.
  • Performs data computations and assimilates field information by calculating and verifying field data computations, preparing notes and sketches of survey work and layout, reviewing field data and results, and maintaining technical records and field notes.
  • Ensures accuracy and completeness of surveys by reviewing and inspecting field work and data computation, investigating and resolving routine field problems, reviewing and planning calculations and maintaining records.
  • Performs survey work and field tasks by setting up instruments, setting survey markers, and collecting field data.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experienced Qualifications: At least 2 years conducting land surveys

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a virtual Oral Board interview.   

  • Virtual Oral Board Interviews will be held May 26, 2021

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:      

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 90% of your oral board interview   

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that may be utilized to fill vacancies occurring at Tucson Water within the next 6 months.
