General Description

Follows an assigned route and operates heavy equipment for collecting solid waste from residential and commercial containers. Maintains the safety and cleanliness of heavy equipment and keeps related records.

Essential Functions

Collects waste from containers by following an assigned route, operating heavy equipment to pick up containers, picking up and disposing of debris and bulky items, identifying, reporting, and correcting hazards, and emptying and transporting containers back to original location.

Maintains heavy equipment by conducting daily safety inspections on equipment, performing preventative maintenance, submitting repair work orders, fueling and cleaning equipment.

Maintains logs of mileage, container counts and weights, fills out forms, and documents statistics and problems.

Provides assistance with other routes, operates transfer station, cleans facilities, delivers containers to customers, and providing information to customers as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: 2 years and over operating heavy equipment for collecting solid waste OR 4 years and over operating other hydraulic heavy equipment

Valid and Unrestricted CDL - Class B

Preferred Qualifications

•Solid waste collection experience

•Class A - CDL

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a Practical Skills Test and a Panel Interview.

Practical Skills Test and Panel Interview will take place on: May 26, 2021 and if needed May 29, 2021 *DATE UPDATED*

*** Proof of CDL and Uncertified 39-month Motor Vehicle Record will be required at time of Practical Skills Test ***

The Practical Skills Test will consist of a CDL air-brake test and pre-trip inspection, a road skills test, and an obstacle skills test. Visit the following link for the CDL manual: https://www.azdot.gov/motor-vehicles/driver-services/commercial-driver-license/Tests_Manuals/manuals   

***The Practical Skills Test will be outdoors; you must wear loose-fitting work clothes suitable for a working environment; open toed footwear and shorts will not be allowed and excess jewelry is not recommended. The required PPE needed will be provided.*** You will be required to wear a mask.

Upon completion of all examination processes, applicants who receive a passing score will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score, which will be calculated as:

  • 5% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 50% of your practical skills test
  • 45% of your panel interview

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.  If you qualify for preference points as outlined in the Employment Profile, you must either email it to EGSD_HR@tucsonaz.gov or bring a copy of your documentation on the date of the practical skills test.

This position will require a satisfactory Motor Vehicle History Report, pre-employment testing, and also requires safety sensitive compliance e.g. random drug screening.
