The Analysis Division in the Tucson Police Department was re-established in 2018, and has since been undergoing significant change. Our agency is committed to creating a team devoted to leading law enforcement analysis nationally. The Associate Analyst role will have the opportunity to challenge long-held assumptions of policing and conduct research to create and guide best practices. The Associate Analyst will help improve decision-making in the Department through the discovery and application of emerging research, examination of data, and participation on both ad hoc and established analytical teams. The successful candidate for the Tucson Police Department's Associate Analyst will bring their skills and creativity to help lead the agency toward setting new standards of effective research and data analysis.

Performs moderately complex data analyses, including integration of descriptive statistics, basic tests of significance, basic qualitative analyses, spatial analyses, and reports on gathered information.
The class performs related duties as required.
Generates maps, graphs, tables, charts, and reports by leveraging Microsoft Excel, GIS applications and police databases.
Conducts trend/pattern/series analyses using quantitative, qualitative, and spatial measures and methods.
Conducts basic data collection and extraction from police-related databases to critically evaluate data; assess the value of the data, synthesizes compiled data into a logical framework, draws inferences, and prepares comprehensive reports and presentations to enhance the information provided to appropriate department personnel.
Supports the design of analytical products and implementation of statistical techniques that provide thorough data analytics to support data-driven decisions.
Supports data-integration models and the Department's vision by collecting and analyzing data in a timely and accurate basis, provides detailed trend analysis reports regarding findings.
Assists in development of research methods, including problem statements, background research, and methodological design.
Reviews and summarizes peer-reviewed literature and other technical reports regarding research and analytical methodologies.
Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor’s Degree
Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year relevant experience in applied social science research.
OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a practical skills assessment.
Applicants who successfully pass the practical skills assessment will be invited to participate in a virtual oral board interview .
Applicants who successfully pass the oral board interview will be place on a civil service hiring list. Candidates may be invited to participate in a selection interview.
Upon completion of the examination process, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List. An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:
The Eligibility List may be used by the department with an approved vacancy to fill in the next 6 months. Selection will be made in accordance with CSR III, Section 2. The list of employees eligible for consideration will remain in effect for 6 months after their names are provided to the hiring authorities. Examination results and current status will be communicated by email.
Candidates placed on the Employment List will receive a contingent job offer and must successfully pass the following:
Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the achieved score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List. Retired City of Tucson employees receiving benefits from the Tucson Supplemental Retirement System who are considering reemployment with the City should be aware that pursuant to Section 22-37(g) of the Tucson City Code, retirement benefits shall be suspended during the period of reemployment with the City of Tucson unless you have been separated at least twelve consecutive months before returning to work AND you return to a non-permanent employment classification. Creditable service does not accrue during any reemployment period.
The following information pertains to driving requirements for this classification with the City of Tucson. Under "Driving Level" None, Secondary or Primary, refers to the driving responsibility as it relates to the essential functions of the classification. License Type, is just that, the type of Arizona Driving License required for the classification. If the position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), the endorsements will be listed under "Endorsements." Under Safety Sensitive a "Yes" means employees with this classification are subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. License Type A,B,C,D,or M may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Exceptions to classification driving requirement's may exist based on position.
